Soul MusicCurrent Lecture Artists out of Greenwich Village- Joan Baezo Baez was Bob Dylan’s friend and girlfriend at some time.o She was mostly a singer, but she also wrote some songs.o Joan played at Woodstock.o Her biggest hit was “Diamonds and Rust.”o Her vocal style was more vibrato, which was common at this time. - Peter, Paul, and Maryo They each started off being single artists, but they were put together by a record producer.o They were major political activists.o They had a top ten album in 1964. o Peter, Paul, and Mary covered Dylan’s “Blowin in the Wind.” They made is sound smoother and more geared towards a pop audience.- Phil OchsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. People booed him when he performed with these instruments. They thought you couldn’t hear the words as well as without those instruments. It took his fans a while to accept it. “Like a Rollin Stone” was named the number one rock ‘n’ roll song of all time by the Rolling Stone magazine. In this song, there was an organ part played by Al Kooper. Kooper was a guitarist, not an organist.o The Byrds covered Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” They cut out the darker lyrics, cut the song in half, and added bass and drums.o Simon and Garfunkel were childhood friends and began as acoustic only. Their producer made the decision to add rock instruments. They did split and do solo careers. Simon became the most famous.o Buffalo Springfield contained several artists including Neil Young. Two of these members then form Poco. One of their songs is “For What It’s Worth,” which was a part of the Vietnam War Movement.- Folk rock is defined as having folk lyrics and that focus on those lyrics along with rockinstrumentation.- American Response to the British Invasiono Americans attempted to replicate what the British were doing. The Monkeys were put together by producers. They tried to sound like The Beatles. They also had a TV show for teenagers about creating an image. Garage bands was also a response to the British Invasion. These bands were rough around the edges, not professionals. Some were able to record and receive hits on the charts. One example of a garage band is The Kingsmen. One of their songs is “Louie Louie.” Soul Music- Sam and Dave were a duo for soul music.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. It contains a preaching vocal style.- However, soul was different than gospel. Soul contained non-secular words, and the choir was replaced with a horn section.- The beginning soul artists were critized by the chuch.- There are three soul innovators: Ray Charles (Genius of Soul), James Brown (Godfather of Soul), and Sam Cooke (Sweet Soul).These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
