Progressive Rock/Prog Rock/Art RockCurrent Lecture The 70s- Fragmentation of Styles: progressive rock, hard rock, new wave, singer-songwriter, fold rock, funk, heavy metal, southern rock, punk, country rock, and disco.- The 70s began the rise of corporate rock. Money drove the music industry.- Blockbuster albums are albums that sold millions and millions of copies.o One of these albums is Frampton Comes Alive. This is the biggest live album. There is a guitar solo performed with a speaker box in his mouth.o Another blockbuster album is Rumors by Fleetwood Mac. They were a British band that grew out of the Blues Revival; however, they added two American members to the band.- The 70s also began the rock ‘n’ roll theater and merchandise.o K.I.S.S. was a major rock band that did this. They were rarely seen without their makeup.- It also stepped up the experimentation in the studio; however, some bands producedsome tedious overproduced recording. Others sounded really good. Progressive Rock/ Prog Rock/ Art Rock- These artists borrowed classical music in rock music.- There was not a verse-chorus song form.- It included classical instrumentation.- It also had complexity with chord structures. - Prog Rock tended to focus on technical virtuosity.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. It contained recordings.- Pink Floydo They grew out of Britain, Blues Revival, and Psychedelia. o Their name comes from two blues musicians.o Syd Barret was a songwriter. He brought an experimental style to the band. Early on, he was the heart and soul of the band. His band did not pick him up for a gig. Therefore, he was out of the band. Acid and a mental illness affected him. o In 1972, they released the album Dark Side of the Moon. It stayed on the charts for about 725 weeks. One of the songs used a cash register.o Roger Water took Syd Barret’s place. o They released several concept albums and had great success.- The Whoo They grew out of the British Blues Revival.o The Who created the first rock opera titled Tommy.o Pete Townshend was the major songwriter; he became interested in Zen Buddhism. o The guru Meher Baba intrigued Townshend.o Townshend tried to complete his “life house project.” He wanted to use a synthesizer based off of the audience; however, it didn’t work. o Townshend borrowed from Terry Riley, who was associated with minimalism.o Townshend wrote the song “Baba O’ Riley” after these two individuals. He made a synthesizer pattern just for this song.o They weren’t really considered a prog rock band, but they did experiment with it.- Led Zeppelino 1/3 of their music was acoustic.o They were known as a pioneer of heavy metal.o They played loud with distortion. Their vocal style also pointed to heavy metal.o Jimmy Page played guitar in the Yardbirds. He wanted to name the band the New Yardbirds. The Who influenced their name Led Zeppelin.o Some people think that they ripped off the blues, but that was the point with the blues. It only mattered because they were very profitable from it.
