Jimi HendrixCurrent Lecture Psychedelic Rock- The Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia originally played in a bluegrass band. The Grateful Dead was not a top 40 band, and they didn’t a top 40 hit until the 1980’s.- Jefferson Airplaneo Unlike The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane was commercially successful. o They alternated the front singer throughout the band, including Grace Slick. She was an important woman in rock music. o “Somebody to Love” was one of their songs. One song titled “White Rabbit” was an ode to drug culture and contained imagery from Alice in Wonderland.- Psychedelic rock contained improvisation and jamming. Many times it included a dramatic vocal style; one exception was The Grateful Dead. The definition of psychedelic rock is hard to pinpoint.- Janis Joplino She was more blues-based.o She struggled with her role in the rock ‘n’ roll world. She was strong and a band leader, but she was also emotional and fragile. o Janis Joplin had such a powerful voice. o She became the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, which was a loose jam band of psychedelic rock.o Joplin became a powerful representation for women during this time.o Her hero was Bessie Smith. She even had Bessie reburied because she rested in an unmarked grave.o She was an unpopular teenager who turned into a rock star.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Their motto was, “Music, love and flowers.”- Jimi Hendrixo Hendrix was born in Seattle, WA.o He played with several people and was even in the army for some time.o Jimi Hendrix could play both left- and right-handed. o Chas Chandler discovered him.o Jimi Hendrix formed a band in English called Jimi Hendrix Experience, who debuted at the Monterey International Pop Festival. Hendrix became known for smashing his guitar, like Townshend. They both played at the festival. Townshend was worried about being similar so he performed first. o Hendrix learned how to play guitar utilized feedback. He did this by having hisguitar close to the amplifier while playing.o He experimented greatly with the electric guitar.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
