The King of Rock ‘n’ RollCurrent Lecture Elvis Presley- His Lifeo Elvis was from Tupelo, MS; however, he spent his teenage years in Memphis, TN.o Some people considered Elvis to be vulgar and wouldn’t watch him perform.o He was a good momma’s boy and a rebel at the same time.o He eventually joined the Army for some time but never performed the same.o Later in his life, he became more of a Las Vegas show.o Elvis had his own personal doctor. He became addicted to prescription medication. This addiction led to his death.- Sun Recordso Sun Records was an independent record label. It was originally just a recording studio but turned into a recording company. o Sam Phillips, who is from Florence, AL, started Sun Records.o He recorded several artists. Howlin’ Wolf recorded with this record company; oneof his songs is “Memphis Blues.” Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, which was These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Usually, the A side had more of a rhythm and blues sound, while the B side had more of a country and western feel. “That’s All Right” was actuallya covers song from Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, the father of rock ‘n’ roll. Arthur didnot have copyright to his song; therefore, he gained no money from Elvis’s success.o Elvis performed in a genre known as rockabilly, which is a mix of country and rhythm and blues elements. He sounded like a black artists so many radio stations wouldn’t play his music until they saw him perform. o Elvis hired Colonel Tom Parker as his manager. His market strategy consisted of television shows and movies. o Sam Phillips sold Elvis’s contract to RCA Studios for $35,000.- RCA Studioso RCA Studios was a major record label with international connections. o Elvis was marketed as a country and western artist.o They tried to alter Elvis’s sound by making it sound smoother. They also added studio musicians and backup singers. RCA Studios kept smoothing out his voice throughout his career.o Elvis’s first hit was “Heartbreak Hotel” with this record label.o Chet Atkins worked with Elvis. Atkins actually helped create the Nashville sound as a more pop country sound.- The King of Rock ‘n’ Rollo Right time: Elvis was a white, Southern boy.
