PSY 100 1st Edition Lecture 5 Outline of Last Lecture V. Methods and StatisticsA. The Scientific MethodOutline of Current LectureVI. Interpreting CorrelationsVII. Experiments and Class InformationCurrent LectureVI. Interpreting Correlationsr (relationship)correlation coefficient: r = +0.57The + or – sign indicates the direction of the relationship. A positive correlation means they increase together and decrease together. A negative correlation means as one increases the other decreases and visa versa.A relationship can be measured by a number between 1 and -1; this indicates the strength of the relationship. Closer to the poles (-1 or 1) means a stronger correlation.Examples of correlations: 1. -0.85 relationship between amount of exercise people do and their weight. The relationship is negative, meaning when the amount of exercise increases, their weight decreases and visa versa. 0.85 shows a strong correlation.2. More control in the work place correlates to more productive people – this is an example of a positive relationship.3. A -0.92 relationship demonstrates a strong negative relationship.4. Sleeping with your shoes on correlates to waking up with a headache. This is an example of a positive relationship. This is also an example of how correlation does NOT equal causation. We cannot definitively say that falling asleep with your shoes on caused a headache, there are other factors we must take into account. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Experiments and Class InformationExperiments are the only way to show cause.Experiments involve random assignment, a control, a dependent variable and an independent variable.Class information:PSY100 includes a research requirement to experience psychological research.Option A: be the participant (default)Option B: report as a participantMini-writings: short writings during lecture -allow you to go into depth with class content-allow you to see understanding at the individual level-10 count towards your grade (12 total
