Morality ExpandedXXVII. Adult DevelopmentCurrent LectureXXVI. Morality Expanded (Adult Development)Morality: conceptions of right and wrongWe grow cognitively1. Pre-conventional: not thinking about the rest of society (mostly in children) Ex: do something just for the money or a gold star2. Conventional: doing things society says are right and not what is considered wrong. Follows the idea that you cannot break the rules just because you do not agree with them.3. Post-conventional: morality based on your opinion of right and wrong judging from a larger scale than post-conventional (not just thinking about yourself). The problem with basing morality on society is that society’s rules can change and different societies have different expectations. Heinz dilemma: His wife is dying and needs a specific drug to save her but cannot afford it. What should he do and why?Example of pre-conventional: Heinz should steal the drug and escape with no punishmentExample of conventional: Heinz should not steal the drug, stealing is illegalExample of post-conventional: Heinz should steal the drug and accept the jail timeXXVII.
