ENGR 100W LAB ASSIGNMENT Dr. Thalia AnagnosENGR 100W LAB ASSIGNMENT Dr. Thalia AnagnosObjectives of Assignment:- Practice writing an internal progress report in memo form. Background: In this assignment you are the Project Manager at EnvironSJ responsible for developing the green campus program at San José State University. Your report is to be written toyour supervisor, Vice President, Kelly Ohm, at EnvironSJ.San José State University has granted EnvironSJ a contract to develop and implement a comprehensive program to make SJSU a green campus. The program must address water and energy consumption, waste management, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The program is toinclude conservation measures, alternative energy sources, reduction of automobile trips to and from campus, green procurement practices, recycling, data tracking, and a public awareness campaign. Research started four months ago and a report with detailed recommendations is scheduled to be completed three weeks from today (November 10). The following is a list of your team members:San Jose Office:Ian O'Flynn – Transportation Engineer Alberto Silva - Civil EngineerMaria Cabrera - Database SpecialistSeattle Office:Tri Tran – Data AnalystBryce Johnson - Mechanical EngineerSyed Ali - Public Relations SpecialistYou and three members of the team are located in the San José EnvironSJ office; the other three are in the Seattle, Washington office. Much of the team collaboration is done by email and teleconferencing. During the first two months of the project, the following work was accomplished: Maria developed an Oracle database to keep track of energy and water consumption on campus. Using existing SJSU documents, Tri entered 12 months of data into the database and performed analyses to develop baseline energy and water consumption graphs and tables. With help from Alberto, Ian collected data on student, faculty and staff commuting patterns. Bryce performed an audit of all buildings on campus to determine what types of monitoring, metering, and control systems exist in each building. You worked with Bryce to investigate building monitoring and data acquisition systems at other campuses of the University of California and California State University. Syed studied web sites and visited several green campuses around the United States to review successful green campus campaigns. Syed also developed an online survey to collect information about what types of green practices had already been implemented on campus. The following two months were used to formulate a two-phase plan, including setting priorities, establishing timelines, and estimating budgets for elements of the program. Ian, Alberto, Bryce and you collaborated to create four major plan elements for Phase 1: building system monitoring and control, campus lighting, transportation management, and landscaping water conservation. Your research indicated that improvements to the current waste management program could wait for Phase 2. Maria and Tri were responsible for collecting all timeline and budget data from the team members for each of the plan elements and creating a comprehensive timeline and budget. Page 1ENGR 100W LAB ASSIGNMENT Dr. Thalia AnagnosSyed interviewed students, faculty, and staff to understand how to best focus the public relations campaign. He developed a framework for the campaign, including the campaign slogan Trojans think green. The next three weeks are scheduled to write and produce the final written report, and prepare anoral presentation. The proposed program is to be presented before SJSU President Jon Whitmore and other key staff on November 11. The Seattle team members are scheduled to fly into San Jose on November 8 and work out of the San Jose office until November 11.Last week, the Director of Facilities at SJSU resigned and an interim Director was appointed who knows nothing about energy or sustainability. The former Director was responsible for providing key data and building plans to EnvironSJ for the report. Now those documents will be delayed until just one week before the report is due.Yesterday Maria’s hard disk crashed and some of the data had not been backed up. Replacing thehard disk will cost $350; reentering the data and running the analyses will take three days. This morning Bryce was admitted to the emergency room with appendicitis. He will be unable tocontribute to the project for one week. He will not be able to fly down and participate in the oral presentation. This means that Ian, Alberto, and you are responsible for finishing up Bryce’s portion of the plan.Your schedule is critical because Maria, Alberto, and Ian are already assigned to a new project at Sacramento State University three weeks from now and must leave immediately after the oral presentation. The penalty costs for going beyond the contracted termination date of the project will be $1,000 per day, in addition to the normal costs of the team’s salary and operating expenses. Assignment: Consider the implications of your problems and what could be done to help the situation. Shouldyou hire additional help? If so, when? Should you have the team work overtime? How much will it cost? When will the project be completed? Do you have a new time schedule? Write your report to the Kelly Ohm, Vice President. Tell her what you have accomplished, what still has to be done, and the problems the project has encountered. Describe the implications of the current project status, and suggest solutions. Remember to consider what she wants to know about the project and what she needs to know. She is counting on you for solutions, so do not ask her for a solution. Your next promotion at EnvironSJ depends on how well you handle this report.Write the report as a memo, using a typical format for a progress report. Take a look at http://www.io.com/~hcexres/textbook/progrep.html to remind yourself of how to write a progressreport. You should include the following:- an introduction that explains the purpose of the report, and includes a short description of the project, the date the project began, the date it is scheduled to be completed, and a short summary of the work completed to date,Page 2ENGR 100W LAB ASSIGNMENT Dr. Thalia Anagnos- a task status section that describes in more detail work completed, work in progress, and work remaining on specific tasks (See textbook or web site for different formats for presenting the task status information.),- a
