ENGR 100W IN-CLASS EDITING Dr. Thalia AnagnosENGR 100W IN-CLASS EDITING Dr. Thalia AnagnosObjectives of Assignment:- Practice editing a document- Practice providing constructive feedback to a team member (compliments, criticisms, suggestions, corrections)Background: In last Wednesday’s lab you wrote a persuasive memo to convince the reader that the future would or would not be dominated by electric vehicles. This week you will examine that memo.Assignment: You are to complete this assignment in pairs. Please find a partner to work with. - Exchange papers with your partner so that you can edit each other’s memos.- Reread the original assignment (Lab #6), and then read through your partner’s memo.- Based on the requirements of the assignment, provide comments on the memo. For example the assignment asked the writer to make a claim and support it with evidence. Does the introduction include a claim? Is that argument presented in a logical manner? Is it supported by evidence? Is persuasive language used? You get the idea.- Does the memo have a beginning, middle, and end? Does the introduction let you know the purpose and scope of the memo? Does the conclusion sum up the argument and restate the opinion?- Read through the memo and check for correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar (do you think your partner carefully proofread his or her document?). Identify overly long sentences or short choppy writing. Make sure each paragraph starts with a strong topic sentence.- Make sure your partner cited his or her sources properly. Are the in-text citations in the formof (author, date)? Check the reference list for formatting by comparing with the examples posted on the course web site. Remember reference lists must be alphabetized and use hanging indents (second and third lines indented with respect to the first)- Write comments on the memo itself and in the comment sheet attached to this assignment. Don’t be hesitant to point things out. You are HELPING your partner improve his or her writing.- Discuss your edits and comments with your partner. Start with the strengths of the memo, then discuss improvements.- Return his or her paper.Things to Keep in MindThis is a peer who, like you, is trying to improve his or her writing.Be as positive as possible about your comments.Don’t fix every problem. If you can, fix it the first time, and then later in the document identify itand let the author fix it.Don’t be shy about identifying problems. You will be helping your partner getting a better grade!Page 1ENGR 100W IN-CLASS EDITING Dr. Thalia AnagnosComment SheetName of student who completed original assignment:Name of Editor: Strengths of memoOverall look of memo (white space, use of headings, bullets, page numbers, etc.)Formatting meets specifications (margins, line spacing, font size, etc.) Proper format of memo with descriptive subject line and headingsIntroduction with clear and focused position statement that is maintained throughout the piece.Establishes background information (context) for the presentation of ideas.Arranges arguments, reasons, and/or evidence effectively and persuasively.
