America During the Age of Imperialism We join Great Britain, France, Germany, as a big power We become Colonizers in 1898o There is conflicto Intense arguments over whether we should be colonizers and wield our power over other countrieso The reason for colonizing is so you have more power, you can take the natural resources and the economic wealth from that region or country Imperialism is the policy, the advocacy, or the practice of extending your nations power over another region or country. Often by direct territorial acquisition or in an indirect way. Imperial power is done to take control of the politics, economy and sometimes the culture. II. Europe’s Imperial Heyday (19th Century) 1880-1950 is the high water mark of European Imperialism It is mainly Europeans that are engaged in imperialismo Many of the country’s in the world were being controlled by England just like the U.S. for awhileIII. The Spanish-American War (1898) The Spanish are fighting ruthlessly They are losing ground so they are forced to switch to ruthless tactics America has a tendency to side with the Cubans against the spanish Two Key eventso De Lome Letter Was a letter written by a Cuban government official that was sent to a Spanish government official. A spy steals it and showsit to America. When America does nothing about the letterbecause they didn’t look at the Cuban threats as something that was serious, so the Spanish were insulted. Anti-Imperialist Feelings Teller Amendmento Cuba is free from Spain Anti-Imperial League Anti-Imperials angered by Platt Amendmento The Platt Amendment tells Cuba they are free but that the United States will handle their foreign policyo America also reserves the right to remove their government and placeit with another if we want it Philippines – bought for $20 millionVII. Philippines – America as the new Spain Cuba and the Philippines are taken over by America due to the war Once America gets their hands on the other country’s it is harder for them to let go The Philippines were not happy that we had gotten rid of Spain and then tookover their place and started to try and control the PhilippinesVIII.
