BIOL 101 1nd Edition Lecture 33 Outline of Last Lecture I. Innate Immune Responsea. External Barriersb. Internal BarriersII. Inflammatory ResponseIII. Adaptive Immunity’s Two ArmsIV. Antibody-mediated ResponseOutline of Current Lecture I. Cell Mediated Adaptive Response II. Cytotoxic T CellsIII. Self Nonself ComplexCurrent Lecture V. Cell-Mediated Adaptive ResponseThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Cytotoxic T cells are able to recognize infected body cells because the green protein and the yellow triangles form a self-nonself complex. The Cytotoxic T cells are the cells with the purple proteins. The redcircles go into the holes and lysis the cell (these enzymes call the cell death)Yellow – macrophage (big eater) he eats the pathogens. The macrophage can present the self-nonself protein since it shows antigens as well. The second cell is a helper T cell (middle cell) it recognizes the self-nonself complex. The blue cell is a white blood cell known as a B cell. The helper T cells stimulate thegrowth of the B cell. The B cells produce antibodies. The cell on the bottom is a cytotoxic T cell. The consequence of having no helper T cells: you wouldn’t be able to stimulate B cells therefore you wouldn’t produce antibodies – this occurs in HIV infected patients. As the HIV levels in blood increases, the number of Helper T cells decreases, diminishing the patient’s ability to fight infection. When helper Tcells are low enough, the body cannot fight disease and
