and cared for by partners we hold in high esteem But if everyone wants the same things why are intimate relationships nevertheless so difficult to form and maintain Over the ten weeks of this course we will pursue this question pretty single mindedly adopting a range of perspectives to understand how it is that intimate relationships develop thrive or deteriorate over time Bradbury T N Karney B R that are totally absent in earlier editions and will be featured prominently on the exams So please do make sure you have access to the latest 3rd edition or you will miss crucial material Course Requirements Reading For each week there is required reading from the Intimate Relationships Third Lectures Welcome back to lectures delivered live and in in person and masked If you are able The material of this course will be presented through assigned reading online videos a short paper and exams All are designed to combine for the fullest experience of this course Here s some more detail about each of these Edition text Do the assigned reading This is the main way to understand the material of this course The reading associated with each week of lectures is described in this syllabus It is a good idea to have the readings done before the lectures for that week You are responsible for all of the material in the text even if it is never discussed in class Seriously to come to class to hear the lectures as they are delivered please do If you cannot make it to class no problem all the lectures will be recorded and made available to be downloaded at the BruinLearn web site of this course at your convenience Watch them The purpose of the lectures is to amplify explain demonstrate and expand on the material in the text Naturally there will be some overlap between the text and the lectures but there will be a substantial amount of material that is unique to each The lectures assume that you have already done the reading for the week so your understanding of each lecture will be best if you have done the reading first You will notice that the lectures are not always 75 minutes of me talking There is also the occasional film clip and lots of discussion with and between students in the audience Videos optional You will be happy to know that we created a series of videos to accompany each chapter in the textbook There are thirteen of them each is about 10 minutes long and they are all available at our YouTube channel https www youtube com playlist list PLexCQI5fHYIcXKSEA86l9F6FiLKKoJIoM These segments are awesome and feature students and researchers talking about relationships This is high quality stuff and you will want to watch all of them but they do not present any material that cannot also be found in the textbook Think of the videos as supplemental a fun additional way to get perspective on some of this material The syllabus lets you know when you should pay attention to each clip Short Paper By 10 AM on Tuesday May 23 you are required to submit via the course web site a 2 page double spaced paper Details about this requirement are presented on the last four pages of this syllabus The paper is worth 30 of your final grade Exams There will be two of these a first midterm at the end of Week 5 and a second midterm at the end of Week 10 We will be forwarding detailed instructions about how the exams will be administered as the date of the exams gets closer There is no final the second midterm will cover only the material in the course since the first midterm Both exams will be multiple choice Together these exams will account for 70 of your grade so do the best you can on them Some people do not like multiple choice exams and I can understand their feelings Unfortunately for a class of this size this is the best of the available options To allow for the fact that it takes some students a bit of time to adjust to my style of exam questions each question on the first 2 Psychology 137C Spring 2023 midterm will be worth 6 points and each question on the second midterm will be worth 8 points So improvement really counts To help you further I will distribute some sample questions prior to each exam to give you a flavor of how I write these things What will the exams test The emphasis in the exams will be on ideas theories and research You will not be tested on names
