bounded the states together and not to tax It also said that congress did not have the ability to regulate trade and to collect a tariff tax on goods that are imported into the country taxation was left to the states Each state had a treaty with a country The colonists did not trust the federal government The articles were basically giving all of the power to the states Congress could sign peace treaties and declare war though they had to ask the states for money When making new laws congress had to ask the states to pass it and all the states had to agree PROBLEMS WITH THE ARTICLES All the land west of the Appalachian Mountains was claimed by the states For example Tennessee was claimed by NC After the war was over Maryland got mad because not every state got equal land out in the west Maryland wanted land the states said no So Maryland was going to veto all the laws Finally all the land out west was put on reserve and the other states lost their land that they claimed and those lands were forming into new states Congress wanted to build roads for trade but had to get money from the states The states were very selfish and congress became pissed ECONOMIC PROBLEMS The states went into an economic recession after the revolution 150 years before American Revolution America was involved in the trade triangle in the Atlantic Ocean Britain was a sore loser so they kicked America out of the trade triangle Basically US couldn t trade with anyone Anytime America goes to war the army needs to have food So farmers expanded their land and sold their food to the army The farmers could sell their food foreign and were in threat to lose all their land The people needed an output for their food but Europe does not want to trade with them with the individual states So the people came up with the conclusion that maybe they ll trade through congress SHAY S REBELLION The foreign fathers decided to have the congress have an economic problems meeting In 1786 shay s rebellion happened in Mass Daniel Shay was a farmer and a revolutionary veteran He was still paying for his farm he missed his payments for his farm because he was at war There were notes on his door
