AMH2010 EXAM 3 Florida Revolution to Statehood FLORIDA UNDER THE BRITISH 1764 1783 Britain obtained Florida from the Spanish It stretched to the Mississippi to mobile Alabama The Spanish traded Florida instead of Cuba There were two administrative powers purposes east and west was a social division East Florida thought that they were better because they had St Augustine Florida had no Native Americans because they were all dead 90 of Spanish that were living in Florida moved to Cuba ANDREW TRUNBULL He wanted to build a plantation in Florida He name s the farm New Smyrna Plantation He didn t want to use slaves He farmed citrus fruit He goes to Minorca to get Mediterranean people because they knew how to farm citrus The Minorcans were the diverse and immigrants to Florida When they got to Florida they didn t like New Smyrna because of the diseases so they left to St Augustine Turnbull s plantation collapses He also knew that citrus would be the crop that dominated Florida FLORIDA IN THE REVOLUTION Florida doesn t have any revolutionary war battle fields A lot of the loyalists from New York fled to Florida after the revolutionary war Many people fled to Florida because it was a safe heaven Spanish vs British The Spanish invaded Florida during the Revolutionary War The Spanish in 1781 invaded Mobile Alabama and Pensacola The British were prepared for it but one soldier lit a cigarette and he burned down the fort in Pensacola In 1783 Florida was taken back to the Spanish SECOND SPANISH PERIOD 1783 1821 The Spanish at this time no longer had power in Europe The Spanish could barely maintain troops in Florida and no Spanish colonists wanted to go to Florida ANDREW JACKSON 1818 The Seminole Indian tribe was like the Brady Bunch compared to the other Native Americans Seminole Wildmen these were the grouping of different tribes that didn t want to be in the war and was consisted of runaway slaves It was a combination of Indians that were kicked out In 1818 the Indians invaded Minisokwe President James Monroe told Andrew Jackson to take care of the Indians The problem was that Florida was part of Spain If Jackson attacked the tribes that were located in Florida it would cause international trouble because the Americans would be attacking foreign land Jackson marched to St Monks and took down the Spanish fort and took troops in hostage and then destroyed the Seminole tribes He found two British officers that were living with the Seminole tribes and had the militia ambassador hung them Andrew Jackson was kicked out of the army FLORIDA TERRITORY In 1819 Spanish sells Florida to the US It doesn t get settled until 1821 The Spanish received 9 million for the trade it wasn t a lot of money The first governor of Florida was Andrew Jackson It was decided that there were going to be two capitols St Augustine and Pensacola At that time there were no roads and information traveled a lot slower so the legislative had to go by ships to see each other They didn t want to risk their lives by ship wreck when alternating between capitals Tallahassee gets chosen to be the new capital because it was between St Augustine and Pensacola Florida has never been one group North Florida is different from South Florida East Florida wanted to be its own state and to have St Augustine as their capital West Florida was like let us be in Alabama If Florida was to become two states then they d be more representatives that would say yes for more slaves Tallahassee was a middle Florida that had good land for cotton SECOND SEMINOLE INDIAN WAR 1835 1842 This war happens because of Indian removal bill Seminoles were told in the 1820s that they were going to stay in Florida forever In 1835 the army came to Florida and they choose to fight over the bill Osceola was the war leader Osceola meant black drink his real name was Billy Powell US army troops went to Tampa to Ocala Osceola and the Seminoles killed the troops this massacre was called Dade s Massacre Dade was the US leader in the army Between 1835 1842 50 000 troops caused the US government a lot of money Osceola was captured in 1836 The army ticked him with peace talk and puts him in jail In 1837 in South Carolina he dies from pneumonia The doctor kept his head we don t know where it is now The army defeats Seminoles by burning down their crops so that during the winter they starve 200 Seminoles went down to the everglades to get away from the war FLORIDA AND WEST FLORIDA SEMINARY IN 1845 Florida becomes a state in 1845 They established two seminaries colleges West seminary was a military academy East seminary was educational In 1947 west seminary became FSU East Seminary became UF Manifest Destiny Oregon and Utah 1840 it was a political issue Democrats Jefferson and Jackson Pro expansion belief that America should expand and that nothing should get in their way Whig America shouldn t expand and that government should put its money in internal improvements They wanted to invest in America JOHN L O SULLIVAN Pro manifest destiny and coined the term STEPHAN DOUGLAS He was also pro manifest destiny The two great migrations were Oregon and Utah Oregon had the promise of land and new opportunity while Utah had the Mormons trying to get away from religious oppression In 1810 Oregon was first claimed by Russians British and the US PACIFIC FUR TRADING COMPANY They d sell the sea otter fur and trade it to china for spices Does a lot and gets no credit for westward expansion was John Quincy Adams son of John Adams JOHN QUINCY US acquired Florida maneuvered Russians and British away from Oregon very good Diplomat MISSIONARIES IN OREGON There was a mass magazine that was published and said that some Indians were looking for religion The missionaries walked across the country The Methodist church sent out Jason Lee In the 1840s he went out to Oregon to preach The Indians never really set out anyone asking for missionaries to teach them religion Jason Lee sent out letters saying that Oregon was the next Garden of Eden and that the soil was good meant good agriculture MARCUIS AND NARCISSA WHITMAN He wanted to go to Oregon too He had marry quickly in order to go so he married Narcissa An Indian tribe that they lived next to in Oregon came down with the small pox and killed them both It s their letters that made Americans want to go to Oregon There was also a depression in the 1830 s many people lost their jobs and homes OREGON TRAIL The main route to Oregon and California started in
