They also were big in fur trade Andrew turnbullo Wanted to create a great plantation of Mediterranean crops because he realized that it had the same climate as Italy. o His wife was from Greeceo He did not believe in slavery he believed that people from Mediterranean would be best to work on the plantation so he imported 300 families from Mediterranean islands.o The people from Minorca and cajorka are upset because it is not like the Mediterranean like they are toldo Yellow fever killed a lot Florida in the revolutiono Spanish soldiers at Pensacola, British soldiers at St Augustineo The Spanish during the American revolution ally themselves with America and try to et back Floridao The Spanish in 1781 took mobile Alabama o The largest battle was at Pensacola between Spanish and British, the Spanish won and had a claim to Florida.o After the revolution, the Spanish get Florida backo The Spanish allow Americans in but only if they fight for the Spanish ifunder attack. Andrew Jacksono The Indians that lived in Florida had been chased into Florida from somewhere elseo The Spanish gave them the name Seminole (which means wild man)o Some called themselves Miccosukee, they would raid crops and cattle from Georgia, a border waro Andrew Jackson was sent to Florida to dissolve the hostilityo He chased the Miccosukee’s away and then just thought he would takea Spanish fort because he has nothing better to do, then chases the Seminoles across the Suwannee river, Jackson makes the Seminoles sign a treaty to live in south Florida and leave the settlers aloneo The saint marks fort was taken over so the Spanish just sold in for 5 million dollarso When Spanish protested about Jackson so he was kicked out of the army but was given the job of governor of Florida. He stayed for less than 3 months and left.o There were two capitols St. Augustine and Pensacola and they just wanted one capitol so they created Tallahassee because it was the point between these other two capitols. Second Seminole Indian war 1835-1842o Andrew Jackson passes Indian removal act so they Seminoles in south Florida were told to move.o Some chiefs signed a treaty that said they would move within three years.o In 1835 troops were sent to move the Seminoles, civilization only extends to Ocala.o Francis Dade was in charge of troops sent to get Seminoles, of the 139 soldiers only 3 escaped from a Seminole ambush.o Osceola (means black drink, a drink that made the Indians throw up so it would help a stomach wound heal faster) was the leader behind the ambush, he was a war party leader, and his real name was Billy Powel, the son of an English man and a Creek mother. Born in Alabama. This war lasts 7 years. He was captured during peace negotiations, and put in St. Augustine fort than a fort in South Carolina. He died because of disease; the doctor cut his head off and used it to scare people.o Nobody came to Florida because they were afraid of the Seminoleso Florida became a state in 1845, people wanted two states made out of Florida, but it was accepted as one state.o 91000 acres of land were set aside for schools, 2 colleges were established, the east Florida seminary and the west Florida seminaryo the west Florida seminary later became fsu, it was also a military school,  Compromise of 1850o Southwestern US 1848- the US obtained a ton o land from Mexico, before the Mexican war even ends a democrat named David Wilmot sided with the anti Mexican war. He stood up in congress one day and announces a condition, also called a Proviso, attaches this to a war appropriations bill and it says that slavery cannot extend into any territories gained during the Mexican war. He believed the land should be save for small farmers, he wasn’t against slavery he just wanted small farmers to have theland He believed that small farmers cant make a living without slaves Wilmot’s Proviso becomes a plank and foundation in anti slavery Abraham Lincoln believed the same as Wilmot Southerners were against this and northerners were for it In 1848, gold was found in California, word immediately spread to San Francisco and everything was deserted to look for gold.o 80k people went to look for gold.o California wrote a state constitution and declared itself a free state with no slavery. When California sent their constitution to congress fro approval and all hell broke loose This is because there was a balance between slave states and free states With California as a free state it would give the free states a 2 seat advantage In congress Suddenly southerners realize that a lot of northern places will become free states after California becomes a state, so the southerners try to block California from getting into the union Zachary Taylor- the president at this time is a large slave owner so southerners believe he will be on their side to block California.- Not only is Zachary Taylor supportive of California coming in as a free state but also states from Mexicoo Congress met in the winter monthso There was a lot of fighting in congress.o Henry Clay, in his 70s at the time comes up with a compromise to avoid a struggle over California He presented 8 resolutions to the senate- The resolution stated that California would become freestate and it will be left up to the citizens of new Mexico and Arizona if they become a slave state or not- Clay also didn’t like slavery in D.C. because it did not look good when ambassadors came- Texas is in debt and clay says if they give up some land claims that US will take up some of the debt- Southern tried to break states into more states to get more representation for slave states- John Calhoun said that the north had outgrown the south because legislation always favored the north, in his speech tocongress he says that the north has to backdown on there aggression or else something bad is going to happeno Calhoun brought up Cessation - Daniel Webster and Calhoun always went against another, - Webster surprised everyone by saying that there must be compromise- William Seward came up to speak and said that there is a higher law than
