Chapter 25 Sports and Entertainment Centers Sports Entertainment complexes offer a focal point for urban development and or revitalization NJSEA New Jersey Sports and Entertainment Authority a public entity SMG Spectator Management Group private entity managing service Origins of Sports and Entertainment Groups Birth of sport venues began with Greek Olympic Games in the fifth century BC Other examples include gladiatorial events at the Roman Coloseum jousting in Medieval Europe and initiation of team football baseball and soccer in late nineteenth century Visitors also seek peripheral entertainment as well such as lodging and dining services Today events such as the Summer Olympics and the World Cup are international in scope generating millions of dollars in revenue and employing thousands of people Development of sports and entertainment in the US follows the ebb and flow of efforts to maintain a vital and vibrant downtown district in cities By the 1970 s the suburban population located in metropolitan statistical areas far exceeded population in cities creating what is known as the doughnut effect As a result many retail businesses followed their primary customers and relocated to more densely populated suburban areas Efforts to revive downtown areas attempted to capitalize on remaining identifiable advantages unique cultural experiences in historical urban neighborhoods ready access to centralized transportation expansive public parking spaces creative municipal and private funding incentives existing large sports venues stadiums and arenas steady growth of the events and meetings market as well as the continued presence of downtown business workers Festival Marketplace and Entertainment Centers James W Rouse developer of festival marketplace integrated downtown cultural districts and convention facilities with entertainment facilities taking advantage of natural urban boundaries Faneuil Hall in Boston Rouse s earliest effort Festival marketplace s remain successful in the US today Other well known festival marketplaces incluse Pier 39 San Francisco Union Station Washington Harborplace Baltimore Underground Atlanta Atlanta five retail typically feature themed restaurants stores museums and sports arenas Factors leading to the growth of these centers Increased leisure time and disposable income among customers Growing market seeking family entertainment Aggressive financing incentives from both public and private institutions Verizon Center in Washington is an example of an LBE site that has made the obvious link to sports entertainment Urban Entertainment Centers and Districts In 1990 s partnership between retail and large scale entertainment companies such as Sony Paramount and Disney created adult oriented urban entertainment destinations UEC s draw primarily on city tourist traffic but also serve local residents First successful UEC was between Disney New York Times Square UEC s have expanded to become urban entertainment districts or mega developments extensive destinations that appeal to and serve many different customers Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex NYC offers a wide variety of sports venues epitomizes the success of the urban entertainment vision International example of UEC is the Burswood Entertainment Complex located on Swan River Western Australia operated by crown limited one of Australia s largest gaming and entertainment companies Venue Management SMG Venue management company based out of Pennsylvanyia Founded in 1977 First client was Louisiana Superdome Manages Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center ARAMARK one of the leading venue management service companies Provision of services during the Olympic games Plans to provide services for 2012 Olympic Games Delaware North Companies family run venue management company offering a host of managed service options including real estate management event management and security services Owned by Jacobs Family who also own Boston Bruins Management expertise in food services retail resorts and hotels special events and catering sports venues parks and attractions and gaming Provides management services at TD Garden Sports and Entertainment Arena As mega entertainment grew these companies expanded their managed service offerings to market their expertise under the guise of venue management Economic Disadvantages to managing a complex of venues Dark Days Occurs in stadiums arenas meeting sites where events may take place only a few days a week with no activity to balance of the week Difficult to maintain a fully qualified staff Venue Management often takes the form of special event management unique one time events such as weddings film openings and Olympics Xanadu Meadowlands Project located in New Jersey home to New York Giants and New York Jets plans to add a minor league baseball stadium 17 screen Movie Experience Snow Park live entertainment theatre and office space Supposed to host 2012 Superbowl and 2018 2022 FIFA World Cup ARAMARK provides many of the venue management services for the complex Mega Even Services and Management Planning for mega sporting events such as the Olympics World Series and FIFA World Cup begin as much as five years in advance of the event itself Chapter 26 What are attractions They are places activities and experiences sought out by leisure travelers The vernacular of the hospitality industry attractions They are the places we visit and the things we do while we are traveling for leisure Attractions are the life blood of tourism They are an integral part of the need satisfaction that fuels the desire to travel Three needs Belongingness family vacation Physiological rest and recuperation Self actualizing Visiting cultural and historic sites Attractions assist in satisfying the needs that motivate travel Attractions are economic Engines Money spent on admission is only a small percentage of the leisure travelers expenditure but then consider all the other amounts the traveler spends on lodging food and beverage souvenirs transportation guided tours and ancillary activities as well as shopping o These expenditures provide economic benefits such as employment for local residents o Support local government when they generate income sales and excise taxes Attractions are
