currently used by our Criminal Justice System We will begin by briefly covering the history of corrections in the United States with an emphasis on the trends in the criminal justice system as well as relevant deterrence theories We will pay special attention to incapacitation highlighting prison culture the programs offered within the prison and prisoner re entry Other topics include rehabilitation special populations sexual mentally handicapped and juvenile offenders gangs and intermediate sanctions This course will be based on current criminological research both quantitative Press In addition to the MacKenzie book each week there will be an additional empirical article or chapter from another scholarly text These supplementary but mandatory readings will be posted on Blackboard please refer to the course schedule below for the weekly reading assignments Both the supplementary readings and weekly power points will be available in the course library tab of the CJC 4410 blackboard website There is a folder for each week that contains the supplemental readings and the power points for that week All lectures will be available on Blackboard in the Course Library While the lectures are available to reduce the amount of writing done in class merely reading over the lectures without coming to class is not advised and is an easy way to miss valuable information that you will most certainly be tested on Course Requirements With the exception of the first day daily attendance will not be taken in this class however there will be one quiz a week with the exception of finals week The quizzes will makes up 30 of your grade and will be two questions worth 1 point each The questions should be easy if you have come to class and done the readings The remaining 70 of your grade will be comprised of three exams All exams will be multiple choice format and will NOT be cumulative Students are expected to take exams when scheduled Failure to take a scheduled exam will result in a zero unless there are exceptional circumstances and notice is provided prior to the date and time of the scheduled exam All make up exams will be in essay format Your course grade will be determined as followed Weekly quizzes Exams 3 30 70 Please note that the weekly quizzes have the ability to either significantly raise OR lower your final grade and are not to be
