Current Lecture- Image-Making in Parenthoodo Pregnancy is a time of image-making Parents form ideas of what they will be like as parents Parents also form ideas about what their children will be like o Parents must change their images to fit reality The process starts in pregnancy - Image = reality: satisfaction- Image < reality: satisfaction- Image > reality: dissatisfaction - Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) o Assisted conception Originally developed for infertile married couples- Has drastically expanded parenting options - Even age restrictions have been changed Artificial Insemination - Insert sperm directly into woman’s reproductive tract In vitro fertilization (IVF) - Remove eggs from the woman’s body - Fertilize with sperm- Implant them back in uterus Introcytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)- Inject sperm directly into egg and then implanting egg o Assisted Conception led to Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Should parents be able to choose child’s physical characteristics and intellectual traits?- ARTo SpermThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
