BIOL 101 1nd Edition Lecture 18 Outline of Last Lecture I Hershey Chase Experiments II Pedigrees Outline of Current Lecture I II III The Flow of Genetic Information Act I Replication Act II Transcription and Translation Current Lecture The Flow of Genetic Information Class discussion Today in class we are going to role play the flow of genetic information We will think first about transcription and then about translation There will be many members of the cast involved in each act of our play today Put on your thinking caps because you will either be participating as a director or on stage as a cast member I Act I Replication i The Cast we know they are DNA bc they have CGAT Deoxyribonucleotides nucleaus DNA polymerase enzyme that synthesized DNA polymers ii The Script all of replication occurs in the nucleus All of the genes are not coding for proteins so they different colors could be the introns and exons These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute Took our DNA separated our strand to make a parent strand Then the DNA polymerase came in a paired up with the parent strand by Chargoffs rules creating an identical daughter strand II Act II Transcription and Translation i The Cast DNA RNA extrons introns nucleus the RNA polymerase synthesizes the mRNA this all occurs in the nucleus Anticodon tRNA has an amino acid and an anticodon ii The Script Cap and tail protect from enzymatic degradation Take away introns Move to the ribosome Occurs in the cytoplasm at a ribosome You can have mutations within genes
