1General Biology 1 Laboratory 4.00 Units Course Description, Prerequisites, SLOs, and Course Content. Course Description: This course is an introductory course designed for non-science majors, which offers an integrated study of the basic principles of biology, with emphasis on the principles of structure and function, genetics, development, evolution, and ecology. Discussions on the philosophy, concepts, and implications of modern biology will be included. Total of 54 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory. Prerequisites: • None Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course students should be able to: 1. Analyze and solve complex problems across a range of academic and everyday contexts (critical thinking). 2. Consider and evaluate rival hypotheses (critical thinking). 3. Recognize and assess evidence from a variety of sources (critical thinking). 4. Integrate knowledge across a range of contexts (information skills). 5. Locate, evaluate and use information effectively. 6. Write with precision and clarity to express complex thought (communication skills). 7. Read college-level materials with understanding and insight (communication skills). 8. Analyze experimental results and draw reasonable conclusions from them (breadth of knowledge). 9. Demonstrate teamwork skills (global awareness). 10. List the steps of the scientific method, and understand the process of science. 11. Recognize the components and organization of the cell, how cells and multicellular organisms acquire and utilize energy. 12. Comprehend and describe the steps involved in cellular reproduction.213. Compare and contrast individual organisms, and populations dynamics which include heritability, adaptation, and evolutionary principles. 14. Explain the ecosystems, and the dynamics of the biosphere. 15. Relate biological principles to their lives, and interpret their place in the environment. 16. Use appropriate biological terminology in discussing biological principles and relationships. Course Content: Topics covered in this course will include the following: • The scientific method and the process of science. • Cellular chemistry and biochemistry Atomic structure, chemical bonding, pH, macromolecules. • Cell structure and function • Cell membranes, organelles, molecular movement. • Cellular metabolism Photosynthesis, respiration (aerobic and anaerobic). • Cellular reproduction Prokaryotic (binary fission) and eukaryotic (mitosis and meiosis) cellular division. • Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) Structure and function, and protein synthesis. • Principles of heredity Mendelian genetics, human genetics. • Principles of evolution Population dynamics, microevolution, macroevolution, and human evolution. • Ecosystem and biosphere dynamics Energy or nutrient cycling, food web dynamics. • Species diversity. Kingdoms, taxonomic features, ecological relationships. • Human impacts on the biosphere • Population growth, habitat destruction, global climatic
