Fanselow*, Robles & Ray Tu&Thu 9:30-10:45 Franz 1178 Fri 10:00-10:50 Fowler A103B http://courses.psych.ucla.edu TA: Shaina Katz Introductory Psychology Syllabus YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INFORMATION IN THIS SYLLABUS. PLEASE READ IT. THERE ARE THINGS HERE YOU MUST KNOW TO PASS THE CLASS. Continued enrollment in this course assumes that you have read this syllabus in its entirety and agree to all policies and conditions stated within. ALL ENROLMENT IS HANDLED THROUGH REGISTRATION AND THE WAIT LIST. THERE ARE NO PTEANS, ETC. PLEASE DO NOT ASK PROFESSORS OR TA ABOUT ENROLMENT ISSUES—THESE SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE PSYCHOLOGY ADVISING OFFICE. Course Content: This course is designed to give you a broad overview of the very diverse field of psychology. To represent the range of topics and perspectives Psych 10 is divided into three modules each taught by a different Professor. Each module consists of lectures and readings and ends with an exam. Course Requirements: There are four components to the course: Lectures (Tuesday & Thursday), Discussions (Friday), readings from the textbook, and participation in Psychology testing. Textbook: Psychology: The Science of Behavior, Carlson et al. 7th edition Exams: There are 3 exams and each contributes 1/3 of the grade. The first 2 will occur in Fowler A103B on Friday Oct 16 and Nov 6. The last of the 3 is during Finals week, Dec 8, and the room has yet to be assigned. The exams are multiple choice and cover all material since the last exam. Each exam covers one of the Professor’s Modules. Please note that there is some skipping around through the textbook and assigned readings for each lecture appear on the last page. Also, some lecture material will not be in the text and some text material will not be covered in lecture. You are responsible for all assigned text material and all lecture material. Again, the final page of this syllabus indicates the assigned reading. Please arrive early on exam days so the exam can begin promptly. Bring # 2 pencils and your photo ID (preferably student). Dates and reading assignment for the exams are on the final page of the syllabus. These tests must be taken on the assigned date. There are no makeups and a missed test will be scored as a failure. Please make your travel plans accordingly. Please check this syllabus before you make any travel plans, etc. Participation: Participation in Psychology experiments is an integral and required component of Psych 10. You must complete 6 hours of testing to pass the course. You can sign up for experiments at http://www.psych.ucla.edu/undergraduate/subject-pool-experiment-participation/sona-instructions-for-undergraduate-participants Deleted: ¶2 The first opportunity for participation occurs on the first day of Class, Sept 24, during “psychological pretesting.” This will give you 1 hour of credit. Also, some experiments will only take “pretested participants.” Therefore, it is highly recommended that you come to the first day of classes. To get credit for pretesting you must register at the above website. For a full description of the requirement, to sign-up for experiments and to receive credit you must register with the Psych Testing Pool at:http://www.psych.ucla.edu/undergraduate/subject-pool-experiment-participation/sona-instructions-for-undergraduate-participants The final day to receive credit for experiments for Fall 2009 is December 3rd (Thursday of 10th Week). If students choose to participate in an experiment on December 3, they must make sure the experimenter gives them credit that evening before the site closes at midnight. If you chose not to participate in experiments you may elect to write a term paper on methods in Experimental Psychology. Plagiarism: There is an honor code in force for this course. All students are required to submit only their own work. Students are not to communicate with other students during exams in any way. No notes or books can be used during exams. Additionally any knowledge of a violation of the honor code must be reported to the Professor, immediately. Any plagiarism, cheating or other violations of this honor code will result in an automatic grade of F in the course and be reported to the Dean of Students. Psychology 10 Website: Course materials and a discussion board for questions can be accessed at: http://courses.psych.ucla.edu/ Office Hours: Students should feel free to make use of the Professor’s and TA’s office hours. Content questions on readings and lectures should be brought to the Professor teaching that module or the course TA.
