G. (2004). Psychology in Modules (7th Edition). New York: WorthPublishers. The textbook is required and can be purchased at the campus bookstore. Acopy of the text is also available for 2-hour reserve at Powell Library.Additional Readings: In addition to the textbook, several research articles have been assigned asadditional required readings. Links to these articles are on the course website.Course Description:Welcome to Introductory Psychology. Through a series of lectures, activities, films, anddemonstrations, this course will introduce you to the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Thetypical introductory course in psychology covers a diverse range of interesting topics considered themajor areas in the field (e.g., memory, perception, sensation, physiological psychology, development, learning, personality, social, abnormal). We will discuss each of these topics, as well as consider theinterrelationships among them.We will use four different learning resources to introduce you to Psychology: (A) the textbook, (B)lectures, (C) supplementary readings and (D) experimental participation and/or article summaries. These are each outlined in detail below.A. The Textbook: Myer’s Psychology in Modules provides a basic introduction to the differentareas of psychology. The assigned readings for each lecture are outlined in the class lecture scheduleon page 6 of this handout. The reading for a particular lecture is listed immediately to the right. It ishighly recommended that you complete the assigned readings before the lecture.B. The Lectures: My lectures will differ from the textbook somewhat. First, not all topics presentedin the text will be covered in lecture. Secondly, I also include some current research, occasionally showvideos and try demonstrations that are not described in your text.C. The Supplementary Readings: Textbooks and lectures are necessarily third partypresentations of information. I have selected several supplementary readings in order to give you firstPsych 10, Section 2, Fall 052hand accounts of research. These articles, some classic and some contemporary, are written directlyby leading scholars in psychology.Experiment Participation and/or Article Summaries: The fourth way we will introduce you topsychological research is by having you actually participate in some current, cutting edge research takingplace in the Psychology Department here at UCLA. Students enrolled in Psychology 10 are required toserve as psychological research subjects for a total of six hours or write three abstracts on articles frompsychology journals, or do a combination of both.EXPERIMENT PARTICIPATION AND/OR ARTICLE SUMMARIES!Over the duration of our Psych 10 course you will learn about the findings of many psychological studies.!But what might not be obvious is the fact that much of this research was conducted at top researchuniversities like UCLA, with participants much like you.! The descriptions of psychological research thatappear in textbooks necessarily omit a great deal of information about what participants actually do inthese studies, and what the experience is really like.! Serving as a research participant gives you aunique, behind-the-scenes look at how research is conducted.!As a student in this course, you will have the opportunity to participate in current, cutting-edge researchtaking place in the UCLA Psychology Department.! All students enrolled in Psych 10 are required to serveas psychological research participants for a total of six hours.! For students who would prefer not toparticipate in research, you have the alternative of writing three summaries of articles from psychologyjournals, or do a combination of both research participation and article summaries.!Completing the six hours of experiment participation is a requirement for the course.! Pleasenote that students who do not complete this research requirement by the last day of instruction willreceive a grade of Incomplete ("I") in Psych 10. In order to remove the "I", the research requirement willhave to be fulfilled the following quarter or else the "I" will lapse into an "F" (or "NP"). Students whoreceived an "I" in the prior quarter they took Psych 10 can apply any accumulated credit towards the sixhours of experiment credit needed to receive a grade for Psych 10. Students who DROP Psych 10 afterhaving served as a research participant or written an abstract CANNOT apply any accumulated credittowards the next time they take the course. So please don’t leave yourself out in the cold by putting off all the participation until the end of thequarter… start early.!How to participate in research.! The posting and scheduling of experiments is handled via an onlinescheduling system.! To access the system, go to http://experimetrix.com/ucla.! Be sure to select read.meand follow the detailed information on how to use this system.! To receive credit, all participation must becompleted before Friday, December 9th.! But as I mentioned above, please do start participating inexperiments as soon as possible, as there may be limited availability near the end of the quarter.!Students who participate in Pretesting, which involves filling out surveys during the first week of class, are eligible to receive one credit toward the six credit requirement. This credit will be applied only forthose students who register with the online system by the end of Week 2. Based on your surveyanswers, experimenters may wish to contact you directly. If you receive a call from an experimenter, and agree to participate in their experiment, make sure that either 1) you are given an authorizationnumber to sign up for the experiment yourself, or 2) the experimenter signs you up for the experimentbefore it is run. Note that you must be registered with the Online Experiment Scheduling Systembefore you can serve as a subject. If you have trouble registering please contact Irina Tauber [email protected] 10, Section 2, Fall 053Writing Journal Article SummariesAnother way that you may fulfill
