Manhattan ProjectCurrent Lecture- Germans learned how to split the atom first- President didn’t push for a-bomb research until after Pearl Harbor- Fermi and Zelard – did much of the research at University of Chicago under the football fields- General Groves put in charge- Difficult and expensive to collect Uranium 235 and separate it from U238- Purchased 500,000 acres in New Mexico (Los Alamos)- Chose Oppenheimer despite his dramatic personal issues- Hard to determine amount of U235 neededo Like planning a wedding for between 10 and 1000 people- Y12 – facility to separate U235/U238- 75,000 people living in Los Alamos- Groves and Oppenheimer were very different but worked well together- Facility K25 used gases to separate U235/238o Covered more area than any other buildingo Used ~10% of US’s electrical power- Thought about using plutonium instead of U235- First a-bomb = little boy (made with U235)- Second a-bomb = fat man (plutonium)- Many thought a test deployment was an unnecessary waste (especially since there is notenough U235)- FDR dies, Truman brought up to speed on Manhattan Project- 1 month later Germany surrenders, Japan doesn’t- July 16, 1945 first test (called trinity)- Crude, sloppy (held together with masking tape)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
