Teaching and Learning With Technology in Classrooms EDU 2022 / Fall 2007 Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education Eastern Illinois University Instructor: Mrs. Judith Heckel Location: BB 1430 Time: TR 8:00 am – 9:15 am Email: [email protected] Office Hours: TR 7:30 a.m. before class in BB 1430. Other times by appointment. Course Description: EDU 2022 is designed to prepare teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum based on the national and state educational technology standards. This course will focus on the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. Prerequisites: Passing score on the CEPS technology proficiency Resources /Requirements: Shelly G. & Cashman T., et al. (2004). Teachers Discovering Computers: Integrating Technology in the Classroom, Third Edition, Boston: Course Technology. http://www.course.com/tdc3 Fewell, P.J. & Gibbs, W.J. (2003). Microsoft Office for Teachers. Columbus, OH, Merrill Prentice Hall. Personal USB Flash Drive with capacity enough to store large projects Course Purposes: Students majoring in preK-8 education shall be offered opportunities to: 1. Practice and expand personal uses of various kinds of hardware and software. 2. Use technology in the design of curriculum for constructivist teaching and learning. 3. Apply learning theory to discern quality technology-assisted experiences, preK-8. 4. Make informed judgments about social and ethical issues involving technology. 5. Develop strategies and a commitment to keep abreast of developments in educational technology. CEPS Rationale and Assumptions for all Classes: Beginning teachers should be able to: 1. Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which children learn. 2. Demonstrate alternative methods of achieving similar learning outcomes. 3. Decide what will be learned and ways to achieve that learning. 4. Strive for positive development of students’ intellectual, social, and moral skills and behaviors. 5. Demonstrate good communication skills. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences in the field of (computer) education. 7. Demonstrate knowledge and utilization of technological tools. Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Review research studies on the impact of technology on learning. 2. Describe the development of computer technology over the past four decades and the implications of this history for instruction. 3. Evaluate ethical and equity issues related to the impact of technology upon our contemporary world and elementary and middle schools in particular. 4. Apply terminology of the field.5. Use and apply telecommunications opportunities appropriate for teaching professionals: web browsers, e-mail, newsgroups, listservs, and web pages. 6. Use and apply word processing, database, desktop publishing, paint/draw, and spreadsheet programs for teacher productivity and administration of the elementary and middle schools curriculum. 7. Use and apply teacher-authoring and presentation programs. 8. Describe learning opportunities available in an up-to-date school media center. 9. Use digital images appropriately. 10. Review and apply criteria to evaluate and select educational software. 11. Apply criteria to evaluate educational hardware. 12. Practice strategies for increasing computer literacy for teachers and students. 13. Design and produce appropriate technology supported instruction. 14. Apply copyright laws to the school setting. 15. Practice ergonomics and proper care of computers, disks, and peripherals. EDU 2022 Course purposes and topics as well as the laboratory setting assume that students will make discoveries, teach each other, and share knowledge and skills to increase the quality and quantity of class learning, and to better meet the challenge of rapidly developing technology. The constructivist model for teaching will be used in this course. Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Eastern Illinois University Office of Disability Services. Course Assumptions for pre-service students of technology in support of K-8 curriculum are: 1. Continuous upgrading and practice of personal computer skills 2. Continuous thinking about personal and professional applications for technology. 3. Timely completion of assignments. 4. Perfect and prompt attendance at labs and classes. (Refer below) 5. Significant communication with class members and instructor electronically and in class discussion. 6. Diligent reading of textbooks and recommended websites. 7. Knowledge and responsibility for the content of the course syllabus. Grading Criteria A = 94-100% B = 86-93% C = 76-85% 1. All assignments must be completed to receive a grade for the course. That is, students are not free to opt out of certain assignments and attempt to earn a “B.” EDU 2022 is a class where you learn by doing. 2. Late assignments will have a penalty. Work that is more than 7 days late (from date originally assigned to the entire class) will not be accepted. 3. Perfect attendance is expected. 4. Course assignments should remain on your Flash Drive, and be available to reproduce as a hard copy if required.Your grade will be determined tentatively from the following: Points Activity 30 Word Processing 30 Spreadsheet 20 Brochure 20 Newsletter 30 Power Point 10 Resume 30 Spreadsheet 10 Inspiration 10 Kidspiration 10 School Site Evaluation 10 Software Evaluations 10 Identifying Useful Teacher Web Sites 30 Web Page Design 20 Smart Board Lesson 30 Final Integrated Unit Presentation 40 Mid Term Exam/Final Exam 30 Attendance (10 points deducted for each unexcused absence) 20 Textbook Reflections (2@10) 10 Participation 400 Total Points Attendance is required. Attendance will be taken daily. If you arrive late, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor at the end of class so that you won’t be counted absent. Promptness to class is also required. Late arrivals (up to 30 minutes late) to class will be reflected in loss of attendance points. Absences on test dates must be approved before class except in cases of extreme emergencies where notification is not
