COURSE DESCRIPTION:EDU 2022 is designed to prepare teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum based on the national and state educational technology standards. The course will focus on the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. PURPOSES:To allow students majoring in education to:1. practice and expand personal uses of various kinds of hardware and software.2. use technology in constructivist teaching and learning.3. apply learning theory to discern quality technology-assisted learning experiences.4. make informed judgments about social and ethical issues involving technology.5. develop strategies and a commitment to keep abreast of developments in educational technology.OBJECTIVES:Upon completing this course, students will be able to:1. review research studies on the impact of technology on learning.2. describe the development of computer technology over the last four decades and the implications of forinstruction.3. evaluate ethical and equity issues related to the impact of technology on our world and elementary andmiddle schools in particular.4. apply the terminology of the field.5. explore, use and apply telecommunications opportunities appropriate for teaching professionals: web browsers, e-mail, Web CT, electronic indexes, news groups, listservs, LiveText and web pages.6. use appropriately word processing, database, spreadsheet, and paint/draw programs for teacher productivity and administration of the elementary and middle school curriculum.7. use hypermedia and web authoring programs.8. use digital images appropriately.9. describe learning opportunities in an up to date school library media center.10. apply criteria to evaluate educational software.11. apply criteria to evaluate educational hardware.12. practice strategies for increasing computer literacy of teachers and students.13. use technology to support integrated lesson planning.14. apply copyright laws in the school setting.15. practice economy by proper use of computers and peripherals.EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENT:1. Continuous upgrading and practice of personal computer skills.2. Continuous thinking about personal and professional applications for technology.3. Timely completion of all assignments.4. Perfect and prompt attendance at ALL classes. (Refer to class calendar)5. Significant communication with classmates and the instructor in class discussions, email and Web CT.6. Serious reading of textbook assignments, recommended websites and handouts.7. Class participation based on the constructivist model.TEACHING MODEL:Information Processing (Joyce and Weil, 1980)According to Joyce and Weil, this model includes organizing data, sensing problems, generating concepts and solutions, as well as inquiry training. The model is concerned with social relationships and development of a confident integrated learner. EDU 2022 course purposes and topics as well as the laboratory setting assume that students will make discoveries, teach each other, and share knowledge and skills to increase the quality and quantity of class learning and to better meet the challenge of rapidly developing technology. ALL assignments must be completed to receive a grade for the course.2. Late assignments will have a penalty.3. Perfect attendance is expected. 4. Course materials should be kept in a notebook, which will be reviewed at the last class meeting. All work, notes,handouts, etc. should be organized by using dividers.
