Course Description: This is a basic course to understand the capacities of computers and Internet, and the operation and application of technology for teaching and learning in the elementary and middle school. EDU 2022 is a professional education course not applicable for computer science or programming. Prerequisites: Must have cleared the technology proficiency test. Course Purpose: Students majoring in preK-8 education shall be offered opportunities to: • Practice and expand personal use of various kinds of hardware and software. • Use technology in the design of curriculum for constructivist teaching and learning. • Apply learning theory to evaluate quality technology experiences, preK-8. • Make informed judgments about social and ethical issues involving technology. • Develop strategies and commitment to keep abreast of developments in educational technology. CEPS Rationale and Assumptions for all Classes: Beginning teachers should be able to: • Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which children learn. • Demonstrate alternative methods of achieving similar learning outcomes. • Decide what will be learned and ways to achieve that learning. • Strive for positive development of students’ intellectual, social, and moral skills and behaviors. • Demonstrate good communications skills. • Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences in the field of (computer) education. • Demonstrate knowledge and utilization of technological tools.Outcomes Specific to EDU 2022: • Review research studies of effects of the impact of technology on learning. • Describe the development of computer technology over the past four decades and implications of this history for instruction. • Evaluate ethical and equity issues pertaining to the impact of technology upon our contemporary world and elementary and middle schools in particular. • Apply terminology of the field. • Use, explore, and apply telecommunications opportunities at EIU: Internet browsers, Email, electronic indexes, newsgroups, html editors as appropriate for teaching professionals. • Use and apply word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs relating to teacher administration and the curriculum of elementary and middle schools. • Use and apply teacher-authoring programs like Power Point. • Describe multimedia-learning options available in an up-to-date school media center. • Review and apply criteria to evaluate and select educational software. • Apply criteria to evaluate hardware and peripherals. • Practice strategies for continuous updating of computer literacy for teachers and students. • Design and produce appropriate technology supported instruction. • Apply copyright laws to the school setting. • Practice ergonomics and proper care of computers, disks, and peripherals. • Design and maintain your own professionally appropriate website. EDU 2022 course purposes and topics as well as the laboratory setting assume that students will make discoveries, teach each other, and share knowledge and skills to increase the quality and quantity of class learning, and to better meet the challenge of rapidly developing technology. The constructivist model for teaching will be used in this course. Course Assumptions for pre-service students of technology in support of K-8 curriculum are: • Continuous upgrading and practice of personal skills with various computers available at EIU. • Continuous thinking of personal and professional applications for technology. • Timely completion of assignments. • Perfect attendance. • Significant communications with class members and professor electronically and in class discussion. • Diligent use of textbooks. • Knowledge and responsibility for the contents of the NCATE course syllabus. Class Assignments 10 points each Evaluation: Your grade will be determined from the projects that you will be required to do in class, completion and submission of assignments, attendance and participation, quizzes and exams. Grade Range: A = 90 - 100%; B = 80 - 89%; C = 70 - 79%; D= 60 - 69%; F = Below 60% **Attendance is required. Attendance will be taken on all class days. If you arrive late it is your responsibility to notify the instructor at the end of class so that you won’t be counted absent. 5 Points will be
