HamachekMaterials: A single subject 8 ½ x 11 notebook for your journal. A two pocketed folder for handouts.Course Description: This First Year Seminar course equips you for transitions in education and life. You will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote success. You will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies.Course Organization:LifeMaps explores four major journeys in life. Inner Journey – We will be learning more about ourselves, our strengths, and our learning styles. This journey boosts our confidence and aids and helps us develop a sense of feeling “at home” within the college community.  Learning Journey - This journey is meant to help us steer through our college courses and texts in a useful and effective manner. It includes active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test-taking, and time management. College Journey – This journey deals with navigating college, using available resources, and understanding the process and what JCC has to offer. Career Path – You will spend time considering career options and develop an educational plan that leads toward your career goals.Goals of the Course:1. Assess their learning styles, assess their career aptitudes and build an educational development plan (EDP) for academic success. (ADO 7: Thinking Critically.)2. Improve study strategies to enhance their understanding and to succeed in courses. (ADO7: Thinking Critically.)3. Develop leadership skills by participating in student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 9: Working productively with others.)4. Access and effectively use college resources. (ADO 7: Thinking Critically.)Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs):The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. Some of these Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) are addressed in this class, including:- The ability to think critically and solve problems. (ADO #7)- The ability to work productively with others. (ADO #9)Course Assignments:1) Reflective Journal. (This is worth 20% of your overall grade.)You will have to keep a journal and write in it every week. Topics will be given to you in class. Please bring it with you to every class session.2) Participation. (This is worth 20% of your overall grade.)You are responsible for your own learning but we all learn more effectively when we work together. You need to be actively involved in the class and in our discussions.3) Homework. (This is worth 20% of your overall grade.)You will be responsible for assignments given to you in class and done as homework. These assignments will help you with your final project.4) Final Project. (This is worth 40% of your overall grade.)You will assemble a presentation that includes your individual journey toward succeeding in college including, but not limited to, how you study best, how you learn best, how you organize your time, and where you want your college path to lead you.Responsibilities:My responsibilities include - Accessibility.
