FYS 110: Life MapsFall 2008Course SyllabusInstructor: Heather GetsonClass Meeting: Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Office hours: by appointment; before or after classText: Step By Step to College and Career Success by John N. GardnerMaterials: 3-ring binder, notebook for taking notes, pens, folder, student plannerCourse Description:This first-year experience course equips you for transitions in education and life. You will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical application to promote success. You will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies.Organization of Course:Life Maps explores four major journeys that we live.Inner Journey: A main journey is one of learning more about yourself, your strengths, and your learning styles. This journey includes gaining confidence in yourself as you become part of the college community.Learning Journey: This journey includes active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test-taking, and time management.College Journey: We will explore the journey of college, using resources, and understanding the processes.Life Journey: All of these journeys are involved in forming the career path you choose. This course will help with your career choice and with developing and education plan toward that goal.Course Expectations:Academic Honesty: is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing your own work, and not representing others’ work as your own. Either by plagiarism, by cheatingor by helping others to do so.Attendance: You must be in class so that you can complete the in class assignments. You will be expected to contribute to the class and much of the material will be given by class discussion. Please let me know if you will be missing a class in advance, if this is possible, in order to get the information to you. More than one absence will result in a lower course grade unless you havediscussed the issue with me. Please be on-time. I do not want class to be interrupted by late comers.Cell Phone Use: Your cell phones should be turned off or silenced when in the classroom. If you must make a call do so during break. Please leave the class if a call can not be avoided. Homework: Homework should be done before class. You will be expected to participate in discussions about your reading. To do this you need to have your reading completed. All other homework will be due at the beginning of class. If you are absent and miss some homework, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and complete the work. You will need to submit the work by the next class period.I will give you your homework assignment at the end of each class. Remember to keep all your work in a folder in order to create your portfolio at the end of the semester.Dropping the class: If you feel that you need to drop the class for what ever reason please come and see me as soon as possible. You may also want to see an advisor before you drop a class. Course Assignments:1. Journal Topics and Reflections: Keep these entries together in one of you two folders as a way to keep yourself organized. The will be added to your final project.2. Activities: There will be many activities assigned during the class period and many you will need to complete at home. You will get each assignment with enough time to complete each one. 3. Participation: This is an active course. You will be expected to be courteous to the other students in the class. Actively engaging in discussions and completing work will be expected. 4. Educational Portfolio: You will work on various assignments throughout the semester which will become part of your portfolio. It will contain information about your career goals, education plan, learning style, strengths as a learner, and effective study and time management strategies.Course Grading:20% Journal Topics20% Activities20% Participation40% Portfolio100% TotalI will do my best to offer any help that you may need to succeed in college.
