Gaule Phone: 248-217-4338 E-mail:[email protected] Office Hours: Before and after class or by appointment Course Description This first year experience course equips you for transitions in education and in life. You will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote success. Students will develop a learning portfolio and an education plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategy. Perquisite None Course Materials o Textbook: Step by Step to College & Career Success Third Edition –John N. Gardner and Betsy O. Barefoot o JCC Planner o Notebook o 3 Ring Binder o Flash Drive Organization Of The Course Inner Journey- Learning about yourself. Mainly determining your strengths, learning styles, gaining self-confidence, and becoming part of the college. Learning Journey- Learning how to actively learn, efficient and effective study strategies, test taking skills, and time management techniques. College Journey- The exploration of the college and the college community by using resources and understanding the college processes. Life Journey- This is the combination of all the journeys involved in forming the career path that you choose. This course will help you with your career choice and developing an education plan toward that goal.2 Course Goals 1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic success. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving) 2. Improve study strategies to enhance your understanding and to succeed in courses. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving) 3. Develop leadership skills by participating in student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 5: Working Productively With Others) 4. Assess and effectively use college resources. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving) Associate Degree Outcome The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO) addressed in this class are: o ADO 4: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving o ADO 5: Working Productively With Others Student Responsibility o Students are responsible to attend and participate in every class. In addition students are responsible to turn in all completed assignments at the beginning of each class. o Students are to spend two hours studying outside of class for every hour spent in class. Students who need help should seek help when needed and where available. Course Management I will not drop you from the course, it is your responsibility to withdraw, drop or take an incomplete through the school other wise it will result in a failing grade. Instructor’s Responsibility It is the instructor’s responsibility to provide the teachings of the course in a timely manner. It is also the responsibility to bring a variety of learning to the class. Most importantly it is your instructors responsibility to be available to you for any questions during or outside of class. Assignments handed in late will be marked down by one letter grade. Example: an “A” paper late will be marked down to a “B” grade. o All assignments and reading must be done prior to class. o If you will not be present to turn in an assignment it is your responsibility to make prior arrangements of turning it in. Attendance Attendance is very important to this class due to the topic of the class. It will be taken everyday at the end of each class. Students are required to come to every class on time and prepared ready to learn. Attendance requires you to stay for the duration of the class, if you must leave early please let me know before the class begins. The student is responsible for all missed work/assignments. Do not email me asking to fill you in on what you missed. You will be graded on attendance; every missed class will result in a reduction of 5 points. Three (3) or more absences will result in a failing grade in the course.4 Academic Honesty Policy The JCC Catalog states, “Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so…faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonest may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself. Instructors should document instances of academic dishonesty in writing to the Academic Dean.” Help For Students Please note that JCC provides learning assistance. The Center for Student Success offers tutoring and additional services for academic success. They are located in Walker Hall 125.
