Barefoot Required supplies Notebook for Personal Portfolio Course Philosophy and Description: The first year seminar provides you with a transition into the college environment. You will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote your college success. You will develop a learning portfolio with an educational plan, while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies. Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO’s) The JCC Board of Trustees has determined that all graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in college. The ADO’s addressed in this class are: The ability to think critically and solve problems (ADO #7) The ability to work productively with others (ADO #9) These will be accomplished through the goals of the class: Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic Success (ADO #7) Improve your study strategies to enhance your understanding to succeed in courses (ADO #4) Access and effectively use college resources (ADO #9) Instructors Responsibility for your learning: Accessibility-Before or after class by appointment or by e-mail Timeliness-I will be on time for class and will return your work to you within one week of its completion I will furnish you with an agenda of each class session Student Responsibilities for your learning Timeliness-Be on time and turn your work in by the due date Attendance and Participation-A significant portion of your grade is calculated based on both of these AssignmentsAssigned reading and written work is due before class begins. If you have any questions about an assignment please e-mail me or ask me before the assignment is due Attendance and Participation-You need to attend each scheduled class. Missing one class will negatively affect your grade. Active participation is expected. If you cannot attend a class e-mail me. Organization of Class and Grading 500 points total 20%=(100 points) Small group work and participation will be the main methods that this will utilize. You will be asked to complete assignments working as a team 20% (100 points each)=Reflection Writings. A written reflection, which will be a minimum of three paragraphs including the following: A brief summary of assigned reading OR A response to the weekly writing prompt 40% (200 points)=Capstone Project: This will culminate your experience in FYS. It will be a portfolio that contains information about your career goals, education plan, and learning style, strengths as a learner and effective study and time management strategies 20%(100 points)=Participation and Attendance of full class period. Grading At 2-5-8 Weeks. The grades assigned are letters with the following meanings: V=Verifies that you are participating and your work so far has been accepted H=Means you are participating, but your work shows you may require help in order to complete the class successfully. You will be contacted by the Center for Student Success and offered tutoring services. Q=means that you have quit participating in the course. You will be automatically withdrawn from the course. Grading Scale 92-100%=4.0 450-500 Total Points 86-91%=3.5 400-450 Total Points 80-85%=3.0 350-400 Total Points 75-79%=2.5 300-350 Total Points 70-74%=2.0 250-300 Total Points 65-69%=1.5 200-250 Total Points 60-64%=1.0 150-200 Total Points 55-59%=0.5 Less than 150 Points=E (Late assignments will be accepted with a valid excuse for 50% of original point value) General Courtesy Points to Consider: Please turn cell phones off prior to class, and no texting during class.My philosophy is one of success-my job is for you to succeed and leave this class a stronger college
