FYS 110: LifeMaps“Life is a journey. You’ll need a map.”Class: FYS 110Class days and time: Monday and Wednesday 8:00 PM-8:38 PMLocation: BW 104Instructor: Elise Fish E-mail: [email protected] explores four major journeys in life.● Learning more about ourselves, our strengths and our learning styles. Gaining confidence and developing a sense of feeling at home within the college community. ●Learning courses, active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test taking and time management. ● Learning to navigate college, using available resources and understanding the processes.● Considering your career path, you will spend time considering career options and develop an educational plan that leads toward your career goals. Required Materials:● Text:Hamachek, Alice. Coping with College: A Guide for Academic Success. 2007.● An academic weekly/monthly planner (calendar) available at most supply stores. This is to help you organize your assignments and reading schedule for this class and other classes as well. Organization is the key to success in college and beyond. ●A binder or folder to keep all your assignments together. Also, it is a good place to keep a copy of the syllabus, handouts and assignments. Course Goals:In FYS 110, you will:1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic success. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and ProblemSolving.)2. Learn and apply study strategies that improve your ability to succeed in courses. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.)3. Develop communication and leadership skills by working in groups and learn about student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 5: Working productively with others.)4. Access and effectively use college resources. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.)Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs)The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. Several of these Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) are addressed in this class, including:● The ability to think critically and solve problems (ADO #4).●The ability to work productively with others (ADO # 5).Course Requirements:● Homework Activities —Assignments will be given to you in class. Most activities willbecome part of your College Success Portfolio project. All assignments should be typed, double spaces and carefully proofread. I require a readable font, such as Times New Roman, 12 point. Homework assignments throughout the course will be worth 230 points.● College Success Portfolio—You will assemble a portfolio that contains information about your career goals, education plan, learning styles, strengths as a learner and effective study and time management strategies. The College Success Portfolio is worth 230 points. ● Participation—Participation from you is an integral part of this class. Successful participation includes being an active member of class discussions, completing reading and writing assignments. You will earn 5 participation points for each class you attend. Inaddition, those students with perfect attendance will earn 25 extra credit points at the end of the semester. If you are late for class you may lose some of the points, depending on how late you come. But remember it is better to be late than not come at all. Participationis worth 30 points + 25 extra points. ● Discover—Going to the Center for Student Success and taking the Career Assessment on line. Discover is an assessment that will help guide you in your search of career choices dependant upon your abilities, interests and values. You will be given a list of career options to choose from, you will need to bring your completed assessment to class for credit. Discover is worth 100 points.Course Work and Grading: ● Homework Assignments: 230 points● College Success Portfolio: 230 points● Participation: 30 points + 25 pts. extra credit possible.● Discover Career Assessment/CSS visit: 100 points● Project Success Day—10 pts for attendingTotal points possible: 600Grading Scale:559 – 600 pts = 95% - 100% = 4.0 = A500 – 558 pts = 85% - 94% = 3.5 = B+471 – 499 pts = 80% - 84% = 3.0 = B441 – 470 pts = 75% - 79% = 2.5 = C+412 – 440 pts = 70% - 74% = 2.0 = C382 – 411 pts = 65% - 69% = 1.5 = D+353 – 381 pts = 60% - 64% = 1.0 = D323 – 352 pts = 55% - 59% = 0.5 = D-0 – 322 pts = 0% - 54% = 0.0 = EAttendance:Attendance is mandatory for this class. This course requires group collaboration. It is expected that you will learn from other students and that other students will learn from you. Your failure to attend this class regularly significantly weakens the meaningfulness of this course for all students, including you and the instructor. Most of the course work will be done in class and therefore assignments cannot be made up. Your experience and academic achievement will reflect the amount of effort you put into attendance and participation in the course.Regular attendance is required. More than two absences will result in your final grade forthe course being dropped one full grade. If you miss 3 classes or more, I recommend that you drop or withdraw from the course. It is expected that you will let me know if youare unable to attend. You will receive 5 points for each class you attend; if you are tardy (more than 5 minutes late) you will lose one participation point for that class. I do not accept excuses; if you are absent you have lost an opportunity to learn. If you are tardy please enter as quietly as possible.Late Work:I will accept late work for one class period after the original due date. Please see me if you are unable to finish an assignment, I offer extra assignments on occasion for studentswho have a legitimate excuse for unfinished work.Class Conduct:JCC is a college not a high school; your behavior should reflect that. When class has started conversations should cease. Cell phones need to be turned off or on vibrate duringclass; please do not answer your phone during class, if it is an emergency you may step outside to take your call.Student Responsibilities:● Come to class on-time and prepared to participate/learn● Read all assignments prior to class discussion● Turn in assignments on time● Be prepared for discussion of assigned reading and topics● Be prepared to share your own
