FYS 110; Section 79a: Life Maps Winter 2009 Instructor: Sara Hammig Class Meetings: Thursday: 7:30pm-8:28pm Location: LEN 219 E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours I am more than happy to meet with students outside of class; however, appointments must be scheduled in advance. Course Description This first year experience course equips students for transitions in education and life. Students will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote success. Students will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies. Prerequisite (s) None Course Materials  Textbook: Step by Step to College & Career Success 2nd ed.  Three ring binder  Student Organizer/Monthly Planner  JCC Catalog Course Goals Prepare students for success in college and career paths. Learning Objectives 1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic success (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving) 2. Improve study strategies to enhance your enhance your understanding and to succeed in courses. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving). 3. Develop leadership skills by participating in student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 5: Working productively with others). 4. Access and effectively use college resources (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving). Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges, universities, and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. I will use the following rubric to determine your final grade: Course Element Point Value Final Grade Course Points Assignments (5pts each) 40 points 4.0 94-100 Journals (5pts each) 15 points 3.5 89-93 Vocabulary Journal 15 points 3.0 84-88 Final Portfolio & Presentation 20 points 2.5 78-83 Attendance & Participation 10 points 2.0 72-77 TOTAL 100 points 1.5 66-71 1.0 60-65 0.5 55-59 0.0 0-54 Course Policies Assignments and Due Dates: Unless otherwise indicated, all assignments are to be electronically submitted through the course homepage (http://jetnet.jccmi.edu) prior to the beginning of class following the assignment date in the syllabus. The ability to meet deadlines is an important skill in college and life, therefore, late assignments will not be accepted. Please note that all assignments will become part of your final portfolio. Although I will not accept late assignments for individual credit, you MUST include all assignments in your portfolio to receive full portfolio credit! All assignments must be double-spaced and typed in 12 pt., Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins. Please proofread your work for spelling and grammar. Attendance & Participation: A missed class is a missed opportunity for learning. Because of the interactive nature of this course you are expected to be present and be on time to each class meeting. If you are unable to attend a class session, please contact me before you miss class. Students who miss more than one class will lose two (2) attendance/participation points in their final grade for each missed class. Academic Honesty: The JCC Academic Honesty policy states that academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating, or by helping others to do so.
