FYS 110- LifeMaps Fall 2009 Location: Instructor: Mrs. Anne Wegrzyn [email protected] or [email protected] (517) 783-2087 or (517) 740-8514 Time: Text: Step by Step to College & Career Success - third edition by Gardner/Barefoot Supplies: 3 ring-binder (for your portfolio) Course Description The first-year experience course equips you for transitions in education and life. You will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical applications to promote success. You will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies. LifeMaps explores four journeys that we live: 1. Inner Journey - A main journey is one of learning more about yourself, your strengths, and your learning styles. This journey includes gaining confidences in yourself, as you become part of the college community. 2. Learning Journey: This journey includes active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test taking, and time management. 3. College Journey: We will explore the journey of college, using resources and understanding the processes. 4. Life Journey: All of these journeys are involved in forming the career path you choose. This course will help with your career choice and with developing an education plan toward that goal. Goals of the Course 1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic success (ADO 7: Critical Thinking andProblem Solving.) 2. Improve study strategies to enhance your understanding and to succeed in courses. (ADO 7: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.) 3. Develop leadership skills by participating in student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 9: Working Productively with others.) 4. Access and effectively use college resources. (ADO 9: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.) What are Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs)? The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) addressed in this class are: 1. The ability to think critically and solve problems (ADO #4); and 2. The ability to work productively with others (ADO #5). Your areas of responsibility for learning Timeliness- Turn in your work by the due date Attendance and Participation- You will get the most from this course by attending every session, participating in the learning activities in class and online, and completing the assignments. The Types of Work in FYS 110 Participation in class activities/attendance- This is an active course and you will be assigned a chapter presentation along with other classroom activities for participation. Your participation is essential in helping us all learn together. Reduction may result for continued tardiness. (50% of your final grade) Reflective Writings/Homework Activities - Assignments/journal topics will be given to you in class to respond to during the week. Keep these entries together as a way to discover more about how to learn and how you learn. Most of these activities will be included in your portfolio. (25% of your final grade) Portfolio - You will assemble a portfolio that contains information about your career goals, education plan, and learning style, strengths as a learner and effective study and time management strategies. (25% of your final grade)Format for all assignments: Typed, 12-point font, double spaced, 1 inch margins, full name and section number. You should carefully check your spelling, punctuation, grammar and organization before handing it in. No profanity will be accepted. Reduction in points may result if not followed. Any late assignments will be reduced by 50% of the possible total points. No assignments will be accepted after the final date of classes. Grade Scale: For your grade in the course, the grade of each segment is averaged together and your final will be calculated as follows: 92-100% = 4.0 86-91% = 3.5 80-85% = 3.0 75-79% = 2.5 70-74% = 2.0 65-69% = 1.5 60-64% = 1.0 55-59% = 0.5 Student Success Services Tutorial Assistance - is available for this course as well as most every course at JCC.
