Students will be actively involved in learning and integrating practical tools to succeed. Students will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies. Life Maps explores four major journeys in life.- One is our inner journey of learning more about ourselves, our strengths, and our learning styles. This journey boosts our confidence and aids and helps us develop a sense of feeling “at home” within the college community.- Another is our learning journey in courses. This journey includes active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test-taking, and time management.- Yet another journey involves navigating college, using available resources, and understanding theprocesses. - Finally, in this course you will consider your career path. You will spend time considering career options and develop an educational plan that leads toward your career goals. Required Materials:- Coping with College: A Guide for Academic Success, Alice Hamachek, 2007. Available at the JCC Bookstore.- A flash/jump/thumb drive, or floppy disk in order to electronically store assignments. Flash drivesare preferable. You can purchase them at any local Best Buy or Circuit City. You must bring an electronic version of your work to EVERY class. - An academic weekly/monthly planner (calendar) available at most office supply stores. This is to help you organize your assignments and reading schedule for not only this class, but other classes. Organization is the key to success in college and beyond. - A binder or folder to keep all your assignments together. Also, it’s a good place to keep a copy of the syllabus, handouts, and assignments.Course Requirements:- Homework Activities: Assignments will be given to you in class. Most activities will become part of your Capstone Project. All assignments should be typed, double-spaced, and carefully proofread. I require a readable font, such as Times New Roman (DO NOT USE ARIEL), 12 point, and the page margins should be set at 1 inch all around. Homework assignments throughout the course will be worth 200 points total.- Discussion Board: Topics will be given to you in class to respond to during the week via thecourse website discussion board. I expect substantive responses. A substantive response should beat least two paragraphs in length and each paragraph should include 3-5 sentences. In addition, you will be required to respond to at least one other classmate’s DB entry during the week. This response should be at least one paragraph in length (3-5 sentences) and should include constructive feedback, probing questions, and encouragement. Response criteria for thediscussion board will be given during the first week of class. Each DB entry is worth 10 points. Each DB response (to another student’s entry) is worth 5 points.- Capstone Project Portfolio: You will assemble a portfolio that contains information aboutyour career goals, educational plan, learning styles, strengths as a learner, and effective study and time management strategies. The Capstone Project Portfolio is worth 200 points.- Participation: Participation from you is an integral part of this class. Successful participationincludes being an active member of class discussions, completing reading and writing assignments, DB entries and responses, individual conferences, and the Capstone Project Portfolio. You will earn 2 participation points for each day you attend class. In addition, those students with perfect attendance will earn 25 extra credit points at the end of the semester. If you are late to class, or if you are absent you will lose participation points. Course Work and Grading:- Homework Assignments: 200 pts.- Discussion Board: 165 pts.- Capstone Project Portfolio: 200 pts.- Participation: 24 pts. + 25 pts. extra credit possibleTotal pts. possible: 589 Grading Scale:559 - 589 pts = 95% - 100% = 4.0 = A500 - 558 pts = 85% - 94% = 3.5 = B+471 - 499 pts = 80% - 84% = 3.0 = B441 - 470 pts = 75% - 79% = 2.5 = C+412 - 440 pts = 70% - 74% = 2.0 = C382 - 411 pts = 65% - 69% = 1.5 = D+353 - 381 pts = 60% - 64% = 1.0 = D323 - 352 pts = 55% - 59% = 0.5 = D-0 - 322 pts = 0% - 54% = 0.0 = ECourse Goals: In FYS 110 you will:1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Educational Plan for academic success. 2. Learn and apply study strategies that improve your ability to succeed in courses.3. Develop communication and leadership skills by working in groups, and learn about student life and service learning opportunities.4. Access and effectively use college resources. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for this class. This course requires group collaboration. It is expected that you will learn from other students and that other students will learn from you. Your failure to attend class regularly significantly weakens the meaningfulness of this course for all students, including you and the instructor. If you have a slack attendance philosophy, you will miss assignments that cannot be made up and you should not expect to receive the rewards given the others in the class either in terms of knowledge gained or a specific grade. Attending class everyday on time is an important quality to possess. It will reach out to other areas of life such as: arriving to work everyday on time, arriving promptly to important dates and appointments, and it also represents the individual’s level of responsibility and reliability.Regular attendance is required. More than two absences WILL result in your final grade for the course being dropped one full grade. If you miss 3 classes or more, I recommend that you drop or withdraw from the course. 4 absences or more can result in a 0.0 for the course. I expect you to let me know, whenever possible, if you are unable to attend. You receive 2 participation points for each day you arrive on-time and prepared for class. If you
