You will develop a learning portfolio and an educational plan while enhancing critical thinking and study strategies.Organization of CourseLifeMaps explores four major journeys that we live. Inner journey. A main journey is one of learning more about yourself, your strengths, and your learning styles. This journey includes gaining confidence in yourself as you become part of thecollege community.  Learning journey. This journey includes active learning, effective and efficient study strategies, effective test-taking, and time management.  College Journey. We will explore the journey of college, using resources, and understanding the processes. Life Journey. All of these journeys are involved in forming the career path you choose. This course will help with your career choice and with developing an education plan toward that goal. What are Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs)?The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) addressed in this class are: The ability to think critically and solve problems. (ADO #4); and The ability to work productively with others. (ADO #5).Goals of the Course1. Assess your learning styles, assess your career aptitudes and build a Student Education Plan for academic success. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.)2. Improve study strategies to enhance your understanding and to succeed in courses. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.)3. Develop leadership skills by participating in student life and service learning opportunities. (ADO 5: Working productively with others.)4. Access and effectively use college resources. (ADO 4: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.)Your GoalsThis course is about you learning more about college and how to succeed. Take a moment to list some goals you might have for our time together. What are your concerns and what would you like to achieve?Your instructor’s area of responsibility for your learningAccessibility – E-mail me, come to my office during office hours, or set an appointment. I will beglad to discuss your college experience and assist you with this class. Variety – The class will offer a variety of activities, workshopping, discussion, computer work and projects.Your area of responsibilitiesTimeliness – This class is your chosen work; therefore I expect you in class, before the start of each class so that by the time class starts you are settled in, with your materials ready to start the class. Coming in late to my class (your work) is unacceptable, irresponsible, disrespectful, and disruptive to the entire class, I expect that you stay in class until dismissed. If you are late to class (the door will be closed), I expect to wait in the hall, outside the classroom, until I invite you in.Attendance and Participation – You will get the most from this course by attending every class, participating in the learning activities in class, online, and completing the assignments. If you miss my class (your work), I trust that you had a good reason to do so. I don’t want to or need to know what that reason is. You missed a day of work and you will accept the consequences of your choice. When you are in my class I expect you to treat me and your peers with honesty, respect and courtesy. Turn off your phones, pagers etc. You are an adult; you are free to leave at any time. You are all adults and will be treated as such. If you need to leave the class, then leave quietly and as unobtrusively as possible by using the back and side of the classroom.I will take attendance each day by the work that you hand in.Work - You must successfully complete required course work. Your grade will depend on your success on the required course work. This course is like life: you will get out of it what you put it to it. Homework must be turned in by the end of class, on the day it is due. It must be stapled in the upper lefhand corner, your name (printed clearly) in the upper right hand corner, on at least the first page, and each section of your homework must be clearly labeled.Your homework is your work’s work. It represents you, it tells your employer (me) what you think of yourself and it tells your employer (me) what you think of them. Work that lacks a positive pride of ownership will be graded worse than not doing the homework. The Types of Work in FYS 110►Participation in Class: This is an active course. Your participation is essential in helping us all learn together. Participation specifically refers to your coming to class prepared and ready to discuss what you experienced during the previous week. What were your achievements? What were your challenges?►Class Assignments: are listed above. Inspirational Sayings Journal: You are to collect at least 25 sayings, pictures, or cartoons that inspire you. Each class (with the exception of the first class) you will provide a copy of one of your positive inspirational sayings or cartoons to each member of the class. You name should be on the back of each saying.Other assignments as they develop from our work together. Assignments will be given to you in class.Class TimeEach class meeting will include a variety of learning opportunities. My hope is that you will find the class to be challenging, fun at times, and worth the effort. Your active participation in class and group discussions will be expected and will make the class more effective and fun for all
