Introduction to Psychology Spring 2012 Psyc 1315-003 Monday and Wednesday 3:00-4:20 p.m. LS Room 124 Department Website: www.uta.edu/psychology Course Description As stated in the catalog, this class will cover the “fundamental methods and content of scientific psychology and will concentrate on the understanding of basic principles.” This course will span a broad range of topics in psychology and will be presented in a format that is accessible to both psychology and non-psychology majors. Required Textbook “The Science of Psychology: An Appreciative View,” 2nd Edition, by Laura A. King, McGraw-Hill, ISBN: 978-0-07-353206-6, ©2011. Although it is not mandatory, the online companion to the book through Connect Psychology provides study aid and has been beneficial to prior students. Course Communication: All student email communication will be through the university approved email address provided above. Do not email me through blackboard. Before you send an email, please be sure and read the syllabus. Also, please use proper communication form in each email. Blackboard Blackboard will be used in this course. The help desk at the library can help you obtain information about the system if you bring your student i.d. Alternatively, you can email them at [email protected]. Attendance Attendance will not be monitored at the individual level. However, students that do not attend class on a regular basis typically perform poorly. Drop Policy If a student appropriately drops a course before 5:00 p.m. on the Census Date, no grade will be given. Additionally, the student may drop the course by the date specified by the University. Please check the University academic calendar for these dates and more information. Classroom Conduct Students are expected to conduct themselves within the realms of University policies. Students will respect the learning opportunities of others and themselves and will not use cell phones, sleep in class, engage in distracting conversation, or fail to allow the appropriate opinions of others to be heard. Students who fail to act accordingly in the classroom, as determined by the instructor, will leave the classroom and possibly face disciplinary action from the administration. In addition, ignorance of guidelines and policies does not excuse a student from academic responsibilities. Instructor: Amber Harris, M. S. Office: Life Sciences 505 Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 2:00-3:00 p.m. by appointment Email: [email protected] (do not email [email protected])Academic Dishonesty According to the Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Series 50101, Section 2.2, “Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts.” Students are expected to educate themselves concerning what constitutes academic honesty. A lack of knowledge concerning academic dishonesty will not be considered an excuse. If academic dishonesty occurs, students will be disciplined according to the university guidelines. Students with Disabilities Policy Students with disabilities that attend the University of Texas at Arlington will be accommodated in accordance with the American with Disabilities Act and students will not be discriminated against concerning the disability. Students should notify the instructor at the beginning of the semester and offer documentation from appropriate administration if required. Students with disabilities should communicate with the instructor to ensure that they will obtain the best educational experience possible. Student Support Services Student support services include but are not limited to: learning assistance, developmental education, advising and mentoring, admission and transition, and federally funded programs. Those who require assistance should contact the Office of Student Success Programs at 817-272-6107 for further information. Required Research Participation All students taking this course MUST complete a 6-credit research requirement as required by the Department of Psychology. The research is conducted at UTA. As an alternative, students may choose to write reviews of current research articles. Students who are not in compliance will receive an incomplete grade for the semester. If an incomplete is given, the student will then have the next semester to complete the credits before the grade becomes an F. Further information about this may be obtained under the participant pool information handbook on the psychology department website at http://www.uta.edu/psychology/. All students are required to educate themselves on the guidelines of SONA. This is not extra credit and it is required. All actions taken toward completion of this requirement are the responsibility of the student. Grading Policy and Final Grades The final grade in this course is a calculation of the result of three exams and a final exam. The lowest of the four exam grades will be dropped. The course grade will be calculated as an average of the three highest exam grades. Students arriving more than 15 minutes late or after the first completed exam has been submitted will not be permitted to take an exam no matter what the circumstances. All material gained from the book, PowerPoints, class discussion, videos, activities, or otherwise provided during the course merits inclusion on the test. The final exam is cumulative. Grade Inquiries Grades will be communicated through blackboard. The syllabus grading policy is sufficient for each student to calculate their grade for this course. No information about grades will be sent through email. Grades will only be calculated using the predefined numbers above. Additionally, inquiries about grades or other confidential classroom information will not be provided to non-students regardless if the individual pays for your tuition.Borderline Grades Stay Borderline There will be no grade “bumping”. Borderline grades will remain borderline. 90-100 = A 80-89.9 = B 70-79.9 = C 60-69.9 = D 0-59.9 = F Make-up Policy It is the responsibility of the student to obtain classroom material from another student in the event of the absence.
