King, 1st edition McGraw Hill (study guide optional, but recommended). The text is also available as an e-book at http://www.coursesmart.com or http://textbooks.vitalsource.com. E instruction: This course will utilize Classroom Performance System (CRF) technology. Students will be required to purchase a response pad or “clicker” from the bookstore in order to participate in classroom instructional activities. The setup of response pad and registering student accounts will be covered during the first day of class. More information can be obtained online at www.einstruction.com. Course Description: The course is a general survey of the various areas of psychology and is intended to provide a scientific basis for understanding thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The course is designed to interest and meet the needs of both majors and non-majors. Course Learning Goals and Objectives: Instructional goals are directed toward enabling students to recognize and recall basic facts and describe major concepts and terminology in all fields of psychology. Instructional materials will be provided in an assigned textbook, lecture presentations and on a class-related web site. Assessment of mastery of these goals will be via exams with questions that focus on each of the above knowledge skills. Attendance: Attendance will be periodically monitored. Drop Policy: A course drop grade will be assigned in accord with UT-Arlington policy (see current catalog). No grade is given if a student drops a course before 5:00 p.m. CST on the Census Date, February 3, 2010. A student may drop a course with a grade of W until the two-thirds point of the semester. This period ends on April 2, 2010. A student may drop a course after this point only upon approval of the appropriate official. Chapter Reading Assignments for Exam 1 Chapter 1 What is Psychology? Chapter 2 Psychology’s Scientific Method Chapter 3 Biological Foundation of Behavior Chapter 4 Human DevelopmentChapter 5 Sensation and Perception Exam 1: Tuesday, February 23 Chapter Reading Assignments for Exam 2 Chapter 6 States of Consciousness Chapter 7 Learning Chapter 8 Memory Chapter 9 Thinking and Intelligence Exam 2: Tuesday, March 29 Chapter Reading Assignments for Exam 3 Chapter 10 Motivation and Emotion Chapter 11 Personality Chapter 12 Social Psychology Chapter 14 Psychological Disorders Exam 3 Tuesday, April 27 FINAL EXAM The Final exam is comprehensive and includes questions related to Chapter 15 Therapy and related lecture material and questions related to all previously assigned chapters and related lecture and video material. Final Exam: Section 006 – 2 - 3:30 p.m. Tuesday May 11 2 - 4:30 p.m. Note students are responsible for knowing the final exam schedule which may not be during normally scheduled class hours. (see UTA website - http://www3.uta.edu/registrar/FinalSpring2010.asp#TR) Specific Course Requirements with Descriptions Examinations: There will be three regular exams and a comprehensive final exam. The exams will cover lectures, videos and assigned textbook readings. A study aid will be provided prior to each regular exam. Each regular exam will contain approximately 60-75 questions and the comprehensive final exam will consist of between 100 and 125 questions. Students arriving late after the scheduled class start time, on an exam date, will not be allowed to take the exam after the first completed exam is turned in. Missed Exams & Quizzes: Makeup exams requests will be approved only when appropriate documentation is provided that indicates that compelling circumstances prevented a student from taking a scheduled exam. Examples of such circumstances include funeral attendance, religious holidays, and illness. No information should be provided in a makeup exam request that is private or confidential in nature. A note from a friend or family member is not acceptable documentation. A request for a makeup exam must be made in writing. Note: All make-up exams will be given on the last day class.Research Participation Requirement: Students enrolled in Psyc 1315 must complete a research participation requirement. This requirement may be satisfied by serving as a participant in psychological research or by preparing brief summaries of published research in journals or some combination of the two options. More details will be provided in an orientation session and in an information handout. Summaries must be submitted by the last class meeting. Points are not added to the course grade for completion of the research participation requirement. Course Evaluation & Final Grade: The course grade will be based on the mean of the three highest exam grades. The final exam is optional if the three regular exams are completed. Grading Format, Weighting/Point Value of Assignments, and Examinations: The grade for each exam will be the % correct of exam questions. The minimum points for a letter grade are (A=90-, B= 80, C=70, D= 60, and F= below 60). All exams, including the final exam, are of equal weight. . Student Evaluation of Teaching: Evaluation forms provided by the University will be used for student course evaluation.
