Book Website: http://psychology.wadsworth.com/nairne4e/Psychology Now: http://ilrn.com/nairne4ePurpose & Goals: The course is designed to interest and familiarize the students with facts, concepts, and terminology commonly used in Psychology. The goal of this course is to orient the students towards a scientific approach to Psychology. Upon completion of this course the students will understand the basic principles and theories of psychology as they pertain to a variety of areas including, social, cognitive, developmental, and health to name a few.Office Hours, Appointments & Help: The hours listed are ones that you can count on me being available. If you need to see me at another time please call and schedule an appointment beforehand in order to avoid missing me. I will do my best to accommodate our joint schedules. Communication/Feedback: I have developed the habit of communicating with my students viae-mail. This has worked effectively in the past and I will continue to do so. This works particularly well for working students who may find it difficult to come to office hours for help. Please write ‘PSYC-1315’ on the subject line of your e-mail.Attendance and class participation: Attendance is not mandatory. However, I have decided to take attendance from time to time. Research indicates that attendance is positively correlated with grades. Those who attend regularly have better grades. It’s up to you whether you attend or not, however, I will not be available to re-teach missed lectures. Make friends with your classmates and get notes from one of them if necessary. There will be some randomly chosen days that students can earn 1 credit toward their final grade. I have allotted a maximum of 6 extra credits for class participation which includes but is not limited to attendance, in-class exercises, and class discussions.Psychology research participation: Department requires you to complete six experimental credit hours or to write a series of papers. Failure to meet the requirement will lead to “incomplete” grade. More details will be provided in the orientation class. The research participation credits will not be added towards the final grade.1Exams and Grading Policy: Four exams will be given throughout the course. The first three will be non-comprehensive. The fourth exam will be comprehensive. The final grade will be determined by the average score obtained in best three out of four exams. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Tests will cover materials in the text AND/OR any material from the lecture, videos and assigned readings. Grading Scale: 90 – 100 = A; 80 – 89 = B; 70 – 79 = C; 60 – 69 = D; Below 60 = F. Rounding will be applied for the course grade not for individual exam. A score of 79.5 will be rounded to 80 for a grade of B whereas a score of 79.4 will be rounded to 79 which will yield a grade of C.Tardy or Absent on Exam Day: If students are tardy the day of an examination, they will not bepermitted to take the exam if any class member has already turned in a completed exam. MAKE UP TESTS WILL BE ADMINISTERED ONLY FOR UNIVERSITY APPROVED ABSENCES THAT ARE ACCOMPANIED WITH WRITTEN VERIFICATION! A work schedule conflict is NOT an approved absence; you may make arrangements to take a test early if you contact the instructor well in advance.Drop Policy: A course drop grade will be assigned in accord with UT-Arlington policy (see current catalog). No grade is given if a student drops a course before the Census Date, January 31st. A student may drop a course with a grade of “W” after January 31st, but on or before March 30th. A student may not drop a course after March 30th.Drop for non-payment of tuition: If you are dropped from this class for non-payment of tuition, you may secure an Enrollment Loan through the Bursar’s Office. You may not continue to attend class until your Enrollment Loan has been applied to outstanding tuition fees.Academic Dishonesty: It is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. Any form of academic dishonesty will be reported.“Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or material that is attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts.” (Regents Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22)All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures.
