1SyllabusIntroduction to PsychologyPSYC 1315-009Fall 2007Instructor: Emily Farris, M. A. Class Time: MW 7 – 8:20 pmOffice: LS 521 Location: LS 424E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: MW 6:30 – 7 pmRequired Text:Nairne, J. S. (2006). Psychology: The Adaptive Mind (4th ed.). Belmont, CA: Thomson Wadsworth. There is a study guide available for this text. It is not required, but it may be helpful.Course Description:The course is a general survey of the various areas of psychology and is intended to provide scientific basis for understanding thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The course is designed to interest and meet the needs of both majors and non-majors.Course Learning Objectives & Goals:Instructional goals are directed toward enabling students to recognize and recall basic facts, and describe major concepts and terminology in several areas of psychology. Course Requirements:Grades will be based upon your performance on 3 exams and a final. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Material on the exams will be based upon information contained in the text as well asinformation presented in the lecture. The exams will primarily consist of multiple choice or true/false type questions. The final will be worth 150 points. It will primarily focus on material covered since the last test and will have the same format as the previous exams. Students arriving late after the scheduled class start time, on an exam date, will not be allowed to take the exam after the first completed exam is turned in. Research Participation Requirement:Students enrolled in Psyc 1315 MUST complete a 6 hour research participation requirement. This requirement may be satisfied by serving as a participant in psychological research or by preparing brief summaries of published research in journals or some combination of the two options. Please refer to the department website for more details. Summaries must be submitted by the last class meeting. Points are NOT added to the course grade for completion of the research participation requirement. Failure to meet this requirement will result in an Incomplete.2Grades:There are a total of 450 possible points for this course. Final grade ranges are based upon the following scale:405 – 450 A360 – 404 B315 – 359 C270 – 314 D0 - 269 FDrop Policy:A course drop grade will be assigned in accord with UT Arlington policy (see current catalog). No grade is given if a student drops a course before 5:00pm CST on the Census Date (September 12, 2007). A student may drop a course with a grade of W until the two-thirds point of the semester. This period ends on November 2, 2007. A student may drop a course after this point only upon approval of the appropriate official.Attendance Policy:Attendance will be periodically monitored. There will be 3 randomly chosen days where students can have 2 points extra credit added to their grade if they are present in class.Make-up Policy:Students who miss an exam because of an absence will be allowed to take a makeup exam at the end of the semester. All makeup exams for this class will be administered on the last day of class (Wednesday, December 5, 2007). Please be aware that makeup exams will not be the same as the regularly scheduled exams. Makeup exam requests will be approved when appropriate documentation is provided that indicates that compelling circumstances prevented a student fromtaking a scheduled exam. Examples include funerals, religious holidays, illness, and attendance at mandatory university functions. A note from a friend or family member is not acceptable documentation. All requests for makeup exams must be made in writing. Academic Dishonesty:It is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsion from the University.“Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a3student or the attempt to commit such acts.” (Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Subsection 3.2, Subdivision 3.22).Cell Phones, etc:Please turn all cell phones and pagers off (no sound) during class. Please do not answer your phone, send text messages, etc. during class. If you must answer your phone for emergency reasons (e.g., family member in hospital, birth of child) please leave the room to do so in order toavoid disturbing others.
