A. (2011). The Science of Psychology: An Appreciative View. (2nd Ed.) New York, NY: McGraw Hill. Course Description: The course is a general survey of the various areas of psychology and is intended to provide scientific basis for understanding thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The course is designed to interest and meet the needs of both majors and non-majors. Course Learning Objectives & Goals: Instructional goals are directed toward enabling students to recognize and recall basic facts, and describe major concepts and terminology in several areas of psychology. Attendance It is your responsibility to attend class and be on time. Attendance will be periodically monitored. There will be 4 randomly chosen days where students can have 2 points extra credit added to their grade if they are present in class. Exams: There will be 4 equally weighted, multiple-choice and short answer exams. Each exam will be worth 100 points and will consist of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The exam dates are listed in the tentative schedule section of this syllabus. Material on the exams will be based upon information contained in the text as well as information presented in the lecture. YOU WILL NEED A SCANTRON (Form 882-E) FOR EVERY EXAM! Please come prepared with a Scantron and No. 2 pencil(s) on exam days. I will drop your lowest exam grade. This means that if you are content with the points that you have acquired throughout the semester then you may choose to not take the final exam. Also, there will be no make-up exams. You are expected to be in class on time for exams. I will not give exams to late students after the first completed exam has been turned in. If you arrive after the first exam has been turned in, you will not be allowed to take the exam. Students who are absent on the day of an exam due to an absence authorized by the University must contact the instructor 1 week in advance of the excused absence to arrange to take the examination prior to the scheduled exam day. Failure to notify the instructor or to comply with these arrangements will void the excused absence I will not go over examinations in-depth in class, and I will not email grades. Grades will be posted on Blackboard. It is your responsibility to obtain access to your grades via Blackboard.Research Participation Requirement: Students enrolled in Psyc 1315 MUST complete a 6 hour research participation requirement. This requirement may be satisfied by serving as a participant in psychological research or by preparing brief summaries of published research in journals or some combination of the two options. Completing this assignment will be done via SONA (http://uta.sona-systems.com/). A departmental handout detailing this requirement and important deadlines can be found at www.uta.edu/psychology at the participant pool information link. Any questions pertaining to this assignment that are not covered in the handout can be sent to [email protected]. Points are NOT added to the course grade for completion of the research participation requirement. Failure to meet this requirement will result in an Incomplete. Grading Policy: There are a total of 300 possible points for this course. Grades are not based on a curve, and I do not “bump” grades up for any reason. Grades are based on the total number of points accumulated over the course of the semester. Any course work not completed by the last day of class (Friday May 4th) will be converted to a ‘0’.
