Had a new awakening to his religion, it changed the entire direction of his life.• 3rd phase - London. Preached three times a day for 53 years. Felt experience and salvation.Methodists• No gambling• No alcohol• Meetings of methodists societies two nights a week to read scriptures• Goal: Give a boost to the anglican church. Get people so involved that when they get to church on Sunday they can teach others.• Hymns - many were written by John’s brother, who is also a priest.Doctrine of Assurance Salvation - an inner conviction of being forgiven.Strive for perfection; you’ll never reach it. Jesus was the only one who reached it, but everyone should still strive for it.Final justification comes at the end of life. It depends on how you’ve lived your christian life.Went back into England and Canada when they weren’t allowed in the country anymore.He dies as an Anglican priestBut he founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784• In that same year, he ordains two bishops, Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury.• By the end of the 18th century, the Methodist church was the largest. Today there are twelve million methodists.MORMONSChurch is headed by a ‘president’, who is seen as a modern-day prophet.Local congregation is called a ward.If it’s a small group, it’s called a grange. Baptism is by emergence. Church services are on Sunday, and one night a week is reserved for family.Joseph Smith - Founder• Born in 1805, and died in 1844.• 1830, the church was established in Fayette N.Y.• They moved to Kirtland, Ohio the next year. They were there for six years.• Then moved to Jackson County in 1837.• From Missouri, they aren’t accepted. They move to Nauvoo, Illinois• Then Carthage, Illinois. Now they’re growing.◦ There, a mob kills Joseph smith and his brother Hyrum◦ 2 other mormons wounded but survived.◦ Brigham Young• The group that broke away - Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints◦ 1. It should be a blood relative that succeeds him◦ 2.
