Liberty University -> High academic achievements, and their sports are all division one. But it teaches puritan Christianity!In America• Puritans arrive in Plymouth via the Mayflower• 1639 - Baptists in Rhode Island• The Anglicans taught at William And Mary University (?).BAPTISTS (within Puritans)29 different denominations, Southern Baptist being the largest.John Smythe (1570-1612) - The founder.General baptists - Everyone is redeemed, we’ll all go to heaven.Particular baptists - Calvinists. The biggest of the three. Double predestination.Southern Baptists - 16 million, not even counting children! Only counts those who are baptized.Teachings• Scripture is a huge stress.• Justified by faith and Jesus.• Won’t go to heaven unless you accept Jesus.• Once saved, always saved.• The truly regenerate, that’s forever. But the superficial haven’t made the total commitment.Quakers• Established by George Fox, 17th century• “You quake at the word of God” is what people said... they didn’t actually call themselves Quakers• They believe God is directly approachable, within your soul• They’re part of the mystical tradition, where you experience God.• Puritans thought they’re too subjective in interpreting the bible.• Totally opposed to war• Church is a meeting house • Refused to take an oath• Practice silent prayer• Can’t work in the government• Probably 200k Quakers in America today• Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon were raised as Quakers.• Bible is important, but not the most important. The Inner Light is the most important thing tothem. It is God’s presence within a person’s soul. It’s personal and constant; the bibleconstantly needs interpretation.
