Jesus taught in parables, fictitious stories that makes one basic point.• The Second Parable is called the 11th hour workers. It’s harvest time. 5pm our time, they all work for one hour. Moral: it’s never too late to repent, God will accept you even at the end.• The Third Parable is called the Good Samaritan. Samaritan pulls man out of ditch, pays for him to stay in an Inn. Jesus asks, “Who is your neighbor?”. The answer is everyone.9. He claims to be divine. They have the same power as God himself (?). He forgave sin in his own name. 10. Death & resurrection. “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. He is buried before sundown. On Sunday morning, he rises from the dead. He wasn’t recognized until he spoke. Sarx (your physical body). Paul makes this clear: he’s radically the same, but he’s radically different. Crucifiction was horrible, started in Persia, and Rome picked up on it.Jesus dies, then there’s just one christian church, Roman Catholic, it’s for everybody. In 1054, there’s a break between east and west of christian world; eastern is eastern orthodox christianity (they’re greek, syrian and russian), and west is called reformation or Roman (Anglican, lutheran, reformed, and anabaptist).The Apologists• 2nd century. 18 in all. They’re defending christianity. Church fathers, the great writers in the 3rd to the 6th centuries. Syrians writing about christianity. Nero starts persecuting christians, they’re liable to death if christian.Constantine• In Eden of Milan in 313 granted religious toleration to every religion, including christianity. Hismother, Helena, was a christian. St. Augustine• The greatest writer of the whole first millennium: 1. He was a genius. St. Ambrose was a bishop in Milan, and a great scholar. In his book Confessions, he says there’s a good god & an evil god. 2. Most wrote in Greek, he wrote in Latin, easy for readers. 3. Last great theologian preceding the dark ages.Monasticism• First Monks were hermits, and then they started to live together and form communities. The great monastic group is the benedictines.Charlemagne• 9th century. Crowned emperor on christmas day. Alcuin of York made sure each monastery had a school attached to it. Universities• 12th century. Fist universities. Oxford, Paris, etc. ◦ Fixed curriculum ◦ Academic degreesSt. Thomas Aquinas• Aristotle starts with what you can see & hear, and works up to God. (Plato does the opposite).This style was not popular. His great book is called Summa Theologiae, written in latin. 1st volume: God. 2nd volume: morality.Martin Luther_________________________________________________________Early Life• University of Erfurt. Very pious here. Wanted to be a catholic priest.• 1505-21 he entered the Augustinian Monastery• 1507 he is ordained a priest. Problem is that how much can you learn in just two years? He was brilliant, so they wanted him to get his PHD.• 1512 he became a PHD, and a professor at Wittenberg.◦ Scrupulosity can’t get away from sin/staupitz. Always felt guilty no matter what. He says, “Where can I find a merciful God?”◦ Teaches bible
