Socialization occurs during interaction with each other c. Usually taken for granted—Things we do are unconscious d. There is an ongoing debate amongst social and biological scientist is, “what makes us who we are?”e. Is it nature (inborn) or nurture (acquired)?i. Look more at the nurture side of things f. Are we a product of our socialization or our genetic composition?g. Belief systems are learned; although you are conforming there is still a level of individuality. VII. Agents of Socialization: these agents help to form acceptable ways to function in society(Listed in order!!) a. Family: family is the first agent of socialization because first people you come into contact with. Where you learn what is acceptable while they teach you whatis right and wrong. i. In the family there are still variations of who you learn from including parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents. ii. Children raised in all girl families are likely to understand gender equality b. Mass media: increasingly important agent of socialization because media is becoming a part of the average person’s life more often. c. Peers: those who you interact with on equal terms, they are your equals such as friends, co-workers, fellow students.i. In Dysfunctional families the members usually turn to peersd. Religion: powerful agent. Establishes most beliefs and valuese. Sports: you can involve for fun or relaxation. Learn a lot of gender roles and socialization. f. Schools: teachers and school system as a whole. Develop and reinforce many ideas you have such as gender difference and stereotypes, social class enforcement. The school affects what and how you learn. VIII. Agents of Socialization- Teachers a. Teachers are likely to perceive working-class children and poor children as less bright and less motivated than middle-class children.b. Teachers are also more likely to define working-class students as troublemakers. c. These give view of self- fulfilling prophecy. If teachers believe you are a trouble maker you may be a trouble maker. IX. Growing up in a diverse societya. We can find similarities between us, but variation creates vastly different socialization experiences.b. Changes in US population are creating new multiracial and multicultural environments. c. Middle class children have more structured activities such as clubs, sports, or music lessons. d. In a diverse society you can learn a more diverse culture. Learn the cultures of others around you. e. Socialization is an ongoing process from birth to old age and death X. Aging and the life Coursea. During childhood: i. Usually involves unlearning or re-socializing example things that were acceptable as an adolescent isn’t appropriate as an adult iii. They often resist change which makes aging extremely difficult iv. Some commit suicide because re-socialization is hardv.
