Genie Wiley- Secrets of a Wild Childo There have been a number of cases of feral children raised in social isolation withlittle or no human contact. Few have captured public and scientific attention like that of young girl called Genie. Almost her entire childhood was spent locked in abedroom where she had grown up isolated and abused for over a decade, Genie’s case was one of the first to put the critical period theory to the test. Could a child reared in utter deprivation and isolation develop language? Toward the Decolonization of Social Research o Talks about where social science research is and the relationships between the researcher and the subjects( people being researched)o Written during the 60s and there were a lot of social changes going ono Subjects felt like they were being exploited—the material being published was just enforcing already ingrained stereotypeso The researchers were trying to figure out why the black families weren’t progressing o The subjects felt what is the point of participating in the studies with they aren’t helping o Research being published was being published for other scholars so common person couldn’t understand what they were writing o Dubois was writing towards scholars so wasn’t making a difference o Primary focus: racism and institutional subjects o Daniel Moynihan: Moynihan reported on negro families. He was researching whycolored people were so impoverished. He saw the reason for impoverishment was single families were matriarchal (mothers were taking on the role of theman). The men were street hustlers and not getting a job. .. Didn’t look at institutional reasons for impoverishment. Had a lot of backlash due to research o Researchers were also only doing research to get published so further exploited the subjects. Made them too critical on races. o Researchers tried to get different researchers that were more diverse ex: black and uneducated --- but then this became an institutional conflict too because their theories weren’t accepted o As the research progress, they paid the people money to get them to participate but then there was a backlash from community because the community still felt there was no benefit for their community. o Researchers found that they needed support ($) to make
