These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. Breuer, Wassily Chair - Orange fabric and tubular steel. - Simple chair that works for everyone. o American Architecture  Art Deco - Used industrial materials - Demonstrates america’s success of consumerism. - Van Alen, Chrysler Building, NYCo Skyscraper building with eagles pointing out at each corner. - Niagara Mohawk Building, Syracuse, NYo Niagara Mohawk was the name of Power Company in Syracuse. o Industrial glass, plastic, and chrome. o Sculpture displayed on front of building.  Frank Lloyd Wright - Student of Louis Sullivan – builder of first skyscraper. - Believed architectural form should reflect its function. - Robie House, Chicago o Influenced by cubism and Japanese architecture, middle class society, and the geography of the prairie. o A ranch style house – one level, flat. o Doesn’t reflect what the typical 20th century house looked like. - Fallingwater, Bear Run, Pennsylvania o Beautiful geometric building over a waterfall. o Relationship between nature and structure o American Painting  Abstraction - Davis, Hot Still-Scape for Six Colors – Seventh Ave. Style o Embodies American spirit with bright, optimistic colors.- Georgie O’Keeffe, Black Iris 3o Flower forms symbolizing female sex organs.  Representational Art - Grant Wood, American Gothic o Famous picture of Midwestern couple. Woman stares blankly and male holding a pitchfork. Very plain. o Represents Midwest simplicity. o Aaron Copland, Appalachian Spring  American hymns and folk melodies in ballet.  Choreographer by Martha Graham. - Norman Rockwell, Freedom from Want, from the Four Freedoms series in the Saturday Evening Post o Illustrator who depicted American ideal life. o Captures the “American way” and ideal family life. - Ben Shahn, Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, Syracuse Universityo Sacco and Vanzetti were Italian immigrants who were falsely accused of a crime and executed. Was controversial because of prejudices. o Conviction was influenced be Red Scare and prejudices against foreigners, particularly Italian immigrants. - Edward Hopper, Night Hawks o Depicts urban life as lonely, cold, and alienated. o Displays people at a late night diner  Harlem Renaissance - African American movement in Chicago and New York. - Depicts African American culture/social identity as artistry. - Jacob Lawrence, During the World War there was a Great Migration North by Southern Negroes. o Part of a narrative series: Migration Series. o Flat shapes and use of primary colors.o Depicts crowds of people headed towards three bus stops or train stops can be seen: Chicago, New York, and St Louis. These were the post-civil war popular city areas.  Muralists - Thomas Hart Benton, City Activities with Dance Hall o From mural series America Today o Commissioned by Works Progress Commission. o Depicts American values and experiences during the prohibition era. o 3-d shapes. Depicts American social life with bars, drinking, and home-made alcohol. Very colorful.  Photography - Margaret Bourke-White, Fort Peck Dam, Montana o Photojournalist. Picture of industrial building. - Dorthea Lange, Migrant Mother o Famous picture of mother and children during the dust bowl/great depression. o Documents the life of poor farmers. o Reflected in literature like Steinbeck’s, the Grapes of
