A silent film.  Russian constructivism was eliminated by the Communist Revolution. - I. Strakhov, Emancipated Women Build Socialism Day of the Liberation of Womeno Dada  Founded in 1916 in Switzerland.  Forgets traditional forms of art and expresses art as an accident, chance, and irrationality. Usually poor taste.  Duchamp, L.H.O.O.Q.- The Mona Lisa with a mustache. Expresses the unity of the sexes. The artist has a female alter-ego called “Rrose Selavy”- Which means, “she has a hot ass” - Wants to show the Mona Lisa as a drag queen.  Hannah Hoch, Cut with the Kitchen Knife Dada Through the Last…Epoch of Germany - Newspaper collage. Dada can be found in multiple spots. - Photomontage – puts together cut photographs.  Grosz, Fit for Active Service - Looks like a comic book illustration. - Blends social criticism and satire. o Surrealism Expresses the unconscious mind  Response to Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis and dreams. Freud, Interpretation of Dreams - Libido (sex), id (human instincts), ego (manager of id), and superego (conscience).  Metaphysical Art- Chagall, I and the Village o Two figures facing each other. A goat and a human. Village can be seen in the background. Very colorful. - De Chirico, Nostalgia of the Infinite o Image of a building. Very simple. Small figures.  Abstract Surrealism - Klee, Fish Magic o Image of fish and sunflowers o Psychic automatism = unrestrained expression of the subconscious - Miro, the Harlequin’s Carnival o Imaginative small creatures, like little toys.  Visionary Surrealism - Ernst, La Toilette de la Mariee (Dressing of the Bride)o Two naked women with two deformed creatures. o Bride is wearing a red robe with a strange texture. - Magritte, the False Mirror o An eye with an iris of clouds. - Dali, the Persistence of Memory o Melted clocks. Dali can been seen as the jellyfish-like white creature. Water and mountain plateau can be seen in the background. o Dali tried psychoanalysis.  Film: Bunel and Dali, Andalusian Dog- Frida Kahlo, the Broken Column o Portrait of Kahlo that depicts her back injuries that occurred in abus accident. o A column is represented as her spine. She has pins and needles poking through her body.  Surrealist Photography - Cartier-Bresson, Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare o Captures an instantaneous moment of a boy running through water.  Surrealist Sculpture - Oppenheim, Object o Cup, plate, and spoon with furry, animal-like hair. o Organic Abstract Sculpture  3-D forms and sculpture inspired by organic, earthly forms.  Moore, Recumbent Figure - Plays with positive and negative space  Calder, Lobster Trap and Fish Tail - Depicts a Mobile – moves with wind - Looks like a fish tail o De Still (The Style): The Netherlands  Inspired by Mondrian  Gerrit Rietveld - Red Blue Chairo A simple red blue chair. - Schroder House o Looks like a modern house of today’s time. o Cubist shapes. Clean, basic, universal
