PSYCH 330 1st Edition Lecture 16Outline of Last Lecture I. N/AOutline of Current Lecture I. Information on the Montreux Clinic via in class video.II. Information on Anorexia.Current LectureIn class, we watched a video about the Montreux Clinic, located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It was founded by Peggy Claude-Pierre.- She was getting her doctorate in Psychology when her 15 year old daughter developed anorexia.- After normal doctors were not effective, Peggy treated her daughter herself, to great success.- Her second daughter, then 13, developed the same condition, and Peggy also successfully treated her.- After her successful treatment method, Peggy decided to found a clinic of her own, to treat others with anorexia with her specialized treatment method. The Montreux Clinic treated the anorexic patients in a highly specialized way:- Instead of using the old treatment of convincing/forcing the patient to eat, which did nothing to fix the underlying mental disorder behind the disease, Peggy implemented a different approach.- Each patient had a team of five people that took shifts staying with them around the clock every day.- In the first few weeks a deep trust bond was established between the caretakers and thepatient.- Treatment consisted largely of positive reinforcement and love, to emotionally support the patient. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Hand feeding was common to alleviate the patient’s mind (their mind can’t give them negative comments if they’re not directly feeding themselves; it takes the control off of the patient).- Weigh-ins were done backwards so the patients’ minds don’t have a number to obsess over.- Diaries were used with the patients to separate themselves from their condition.-It was a self-monitoring process that allowed the patient to separate the negative thoughts from their own thoughts.- This treatment was highly effective because of the nature of the disorder. The Nature of Anorexia:- Anorexia isn’t just about vanity. For many, it’s a self-control measure.- People who develop the disorder first develop self-worth and self-esteem issues, and develop the unconscious desire to commit suicide. - They stop eating, to get thinner and thinner, until they eventually disappear.- They see themselves as worthless, not worthy of being saved, overwhelmed by familial or life issues.Peggy combated this mindset by cognitive behaviorial condition to combat the patient’s negative mindset (by constantly saying things like “You aren’t worthless,” “You deserve to be saved and happy,” and giving the patients constant loving attention.Criticisms of Peggy’s Approach- The largest criticism of Peggy’s work was that her method of treatment was so broad that the effects of treatment are difficult to replicate successfully at other institutions.- In 1999, the Clinic was shut down permanently after a thorough investigation.-There were accounts of force feeding, emotional and verbal abuse, and the treatment of a 3-year old child for anorexia, as well as a lack of consultation with medical professionals, since Peggy never got her doctoral degree.Effectiveness of the Clinic’s Treatment- At least 2 patients shown in the video died two years after treatment.- Patients would say that they were sick of being filmed and claimed Peggy wasn’t at all how videos portrayed her. After the Closing of the Clinic- In 2000, Peggy had an interview where she said that she had multiple offers from other institutions to treat anorexic patients overseas, but no proof was ever found of her actually taking these jobs.- Today, it’s difficult to actually find where Peggy is and what she’s currently
