Different types of psychologists and what they do.Current LectureWhat is a Clinical Psychologist, and what does one even do?A clinical psychologist is a psychologist that sees a wide variety of patents. This can go anywhere from marriage counseling, to seeing patients for anxiety disorders and depression, to seeing patients long term for various severe illnesses like schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder. Of course, there are also many other things a Clinical Psychologist can do. What do Clinical Psychologists Do?- See patients- Do research- Teach- ConsultWhat Can’t Clinical Psychologists Do?- Prescribe medicine! Only PSYCHIATRISTS can do that. (In most places.)- The exceptions to that rule are in New Mexico, Louisiana, and most recently, Indiana.How Long Does It Take to Get Your Ph.D in Clinical Psychology and What Do I Need to Know?There are several steps to getting your Ph.D in Psychology, and it is a very competitive path to take. This table shows each degree needed, and about how long it will take to get each degree. As you can see, getting everything you need can take about 11 or 12 years. Doctorate programs forPsychology take only a small percentage of applicants, so having achievements likeThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Also, you would have to pay for you own schooling. (*According to Dr. Hopko.)What are Some Different Types of Psychologists and What Do They Do?If Clinical Psychology doesn’t sound like just the right fit for you, but you’re still interested in psychology, there are other types you could look into. Here, a table covers some common types of psychologists, including a little information about each.Counseling Psychology At schools frequently, have a doctoral degree, typically handle less serious issues than a clinical psychologist.School Psychologist Specifically a psychologist at a school, handle the students and the parents.Forensic Psychology Work with the law. In prisons, jails, rehab centers, police departments, etc.Experimental Psychology Deals with the study of emotional and mental activity.
