GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Aphrodite first speaks—she states that she treats those well who revere her power but punishes those who are ‘proud towards’ her – meaning if you don’t treat her with respect - Hippolytus prays to Artemis but rejects Aphrodite (and sexuality all together) – he still acts like a young boy who thinks girls are ‘icky’ - He wants to live his entire life as a virgin - Aidos- can refer to sexual modesty – shameful—also the same feeling a rich man should feel when he meets a homeless man - After he prays to Artemis but completely ignores Aphrodite who is in the same temple - The chorus worries about Phaedra (she is secretly in love with Hippolytus from Aphrodite—she refuses to talk about it and it is physically killing her) - The chorus on women’s bodies- labor pains - We meet Phaedra- dramatic- Wisdom from the nurse- don’t get carried away with your feelings but she says its healthier ignoring them completely- Phaedra struggles with desire – she cant confess her desire for her step son – she cant control her desires so she wants to die - The nurse responds that she shouldn’t dies because she has two kids to look after and they will be in Hippolytus’ care - The chorus sings about desire – love is more powerful than the stars and fire - The nurse tells Hippolytus about his step mothers desire – he goes off on a rampage about the female sex (people should buy offspring) – wants to abolish women and sexuality completely - The chorus predicts that Phaedra will have to kill herself because the reaction of her shared feeling was disgust - Phaedra hangs her self and leaves a note saying that it is Hippolytus’ fault accusing him of false rape (first suicide note in literature) - Theseus returns home to see his wife hanging and sees the note – he curses Hippolytus (banishes him) Poseidon gives him 3 curses and he uses one on his son - Hippolytus doesn’t tell him the truth but he says that he is a virgin and he doesn’t even want to ever have sex- Theseus banishes him - Hippolytus rides his chariot away and loses control - Bull comes out of the sea scares the horses so he lets go- falls from the chariot and breaks every bone in his body and the bull attacks him - Artemis comes down and says that Phaedra actually lied and Hippolytus was innocent but he has to die – says that they will be remembered forever - Theseus
