What is the name of Odysseus’ father? – LatertesThe climax of the Poem- New moon, winter solstice (festival of Apollo) - Transition into new life- End of the odyssey= end of the age of the heroes Penelope, Telemachus, Argos, Laertes: everyone is at the breaking point - Nostos as return to life as well as return to home Contest of the bow- Suspense builds as the test of the bow progresses- Telemachus almost succeeds (he would have to marry his own mother) – almost as strong as Odysseus - All the suitors fail- The disguised Odysseus asks if he can try – he succeeds- Telemachus speaks up to Penelope and allows Odysseus to try and sends her away – makes her miss her husband (Athena puts her to sleep so she doesn’t have to see the fight that is about to happen) - The night before- he hears the servant girls who have been sleeping with the suitors (he wants to kill them) - The next day the suitors lose control- laugh evilly (laughter of the damned) Revenge- Odysseus’ timing is perfect- could not have waited any longer- Revenge is also total, and brutal, and unseemly- Cannot be the end of things - Arrow through Antinous neck as he is about to drink wine - Odysseus then kills the rest of the men (with Athena on his side) - Telemachus forgets to lock the supply closet with all of the weapons in it – so they become armed - A few avoided death the minstrel, Phemius, and the herald Medon These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Eurycleia comes and see the massacre – and cries with joy over the Triumphs and He silences her because it is not appropriate - The serving women killed (who slept with the suitors) they have to clean up the mess - Once they are finished Telemachus hangs them all ever though Odysseus told them to stab them instead Reconciliation- Need for full recognition and reconciliation between Odysseus and Penelope - Penelope is woken by Athena and sees Odysseus- he is covered in blood o Odysseus says they need to have a wedding to distract the suitors families (he bathes) o Penelope says to move the bed- but Odysseus says that they cant because its part of the structure of the house so she knows that it is actually him o They share stories about the past 20 years and have sex - Need for reconciliation with father- Need for an end to the vengeance- Also an end to a heroic era - Achilles funeral o Suitors souls are sent to the underworldo No action that is in both the Iliad and the Odyssey (Achilles funeral is closet connection)o Burned him, kept the bones in wine and oil, he’s is put in a vase with Patrocluso Agamemnon compares wives- his wide had an affair and Penelope did not - Odysseus goes and sees his father and lies to him and says that he is dead so the father cries – then tells him the truth that he is Odysseus: to prove himself he shows the scar and talks about the apple trees from his childhood - Suitors families come – Athena comes and makes them forget about the killings but Antinous’s father is the only one killed Telegony- Odysseus preforms sacrifice describes by Teiresias- He visits his son with Circe, Telegonos accidentally kills Odysseus - Circe marries Telemachus - Penelope Marries
